HELP Rotavirus?

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive January 2008: HELP Rotavirus?
By Chai~latte on Saturday, January 19, 2008 - 07:54 am:

I think my 2 year old might have the Rotavirus, but I'm not sure. We went to the doctor whom btw is an idiot. We moved a year ago and this is the doctor in our new city. I have an appointment with my old doctor who is an hour away but not until next Thursday.

His symptoms started with a cold which lead to vomiting, fever and now what I would consider moderate to severe diarreha. He has been sick for two weeks, his older sibling had severe vomiting and an ear infection but is now fine, his symptoms did not last nearly as long.

Doctors are no longer recommending the BRAT diet as it can actually prolong symptoms and the only info I can find is to provide lots of fluids and increase the fat in his diet. We are strict vegetarians (no meat, no diary) so we eat a very low fat diet.

Has anyone else had the Rotavirus in their household, if so what did you do?

I'm going to try to get him into the doctor sooner but would love some advice in the meantime.

Thanks.

I am not sure if we have that specific virus. But, on Christmas day my 8 yr old woke up throwing up, did it all morning, then had the diarreha for the rest of the day. The next day she was fine. A week later my son had the exact same thing, lasted about 24 hrs. The following week, me and Faith were both sick.I was taking Malox every 3 hrs, and it really helped me with not throwing up LOL...but had the muscle aches, a killer migraine. The same time my 3 yr old had the stomach bug/virus. A week later, my husband got it, lasted 24 hrs...UGH...hope it is gone.
Now, we think my son has strep, I am off to take him to the drs...
My kids didnt want to eat when they were sick, and we never forced it. When they wanted something we had them drink a small amt of ice water...then we progressed from there. I gave my 3 yr old Pedialite(I spelled that wrong), until she felt like eating. Everybody had a pretty bland diet until 100%,toast, saltines, sprite..

The Norovirus is HIGHLY contaigous. It can also be very dangerous to the young, elderly and those with compromised immune systems. My mil died from complications from it and everyone who had been near her - even the ambulance drivers - got it. It comes out of nowhere. You can be fine and then 30 minutes later glued to the toilet. It doesn't usually hang around for days so he may have had a cold and then caught this as well, but if you are feeling well today, my advice to you is to get to the store, buy tons of laundry soap, popsicles, gingerale, and crackers. Wash down doorknobs, light switches, etcs w/lysol or a bleach and water mixture.

Good luck!

I think I would call your ped with this updated information and see what they have to say. The biggest thing you need to be watching for is dehydration.

Norovirus is nasty! I was with a kindergartener at school, who threw up just before her Christmas program. 2 days later I was sick, but I got sick, at my clinic job. 2 of the 5 doctors I work with got it and 2 days after I got it, DH got sick, so he didn't get to enjoy Christmas Eve lasagna!

It just spread so fast! DH and I didn't need to seek medical care because of it, though. It was just inconvenient.

The little girl who got sick at school, remembered getting sick last year! LOL! She made it to the Christmas program this year.

My doctor insisted we follow the BRAT diet last year for at least 3 days before he would see my son. There was a horrible virus going around and he insisted we try it. My son was better following it. I do not know if it was the diet or it finally worked its way out of him.

I hope your son is feeling better soon!

I just talked to the pharmachisit he said fluids, like pedialite which we are doing and jello but no solid food until this passes. I guess solid food prolongs the infection. My older child did not eat while he was sick perhaps that's why he got better so much faster. My little one loves to eat and has been eating regularly, he's not going to be very happy about not having food like everyone else. Poor little guy, he's napping now.

I'm just waiting to get sick. I've been avoiding eating - I HATE throwing up more than anything else in the world! And will do almost anything to avoid it. We just had veggie sushi for lunch - Lord please don't let me get sick.

I hope your kids are feeling better and that no one else got it.

Thanks Colette, the virus is still in the house. We bleached from top to bottom, but my 2 year old still has diarrehea - it's been two weeks. He has one large explosive movement every morning. I was going to take him into the city today as my old doctor is doing walk-in but we had a snow storm. We have an appointment at noon tomorrow so we'll be going in; hopefully the snow will stop today.

Funny thing is, he seems fine. I can't keep him on a liquid diet he cries at dinner time and wants what everyone else is having. I so hope my doctor can get to the bottom of this quickly.

Our preschool is closed for the whole week.
