Any clue what this could be?

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive January 2008: Any clue what this could be?

There are weird water issues at my house. My grandfather was a plumber and my dad is an electrician. My dad helped my pap alot though and can help with alot of things. That being said there are things going on my dad has never heard of. The washers in my bathtub faucet go bad every couple months as well as the inner gadgets inside the toilet tank. My dad said they have the same water we do and he has replaced his maybe once in the twenty five years he has been at his house. The valve to my hot water tank has gone now for the second time in less than a year! Does anyone have a clue what this could be or where I can find out? My dad isn't a actual plumber so maybe he doesn't know enough. I know nothing but it is frustrating to always have a leak somewhere.

Have you ever had your water tested? That is the first thing I would do.

rust (iron), acidic water? ditto getting the water tested. Well or municipal? You say the water is the same, but the pipes in the house may be different and could be contributing to the problems.
Good luck

How do I get the water tested? Do I call someone or is there a kit or something? Thanks for the idea.

Call your county offices, unless you live in a largish size city, in which case I'd call the city offices. I'd start with the water department and maybe the health department.

If you have a place that sells water, you likely can take it there too. I know that places that sell water softeners will also come test it, but you might have to listen to a sales pitch because they will always seem to find something wrong with it. LOL But if you have a place that sells and or delivers bottled water, they also test it. You can take a sample in and don't have to have them out.

It sounds as if you may have high chlorine levels in your water. Our rubber gaskets and toilet hardware wouldn't last at all in our home outside DC, and I'm pretty sure that was the problem there.
