Looking for SMALL dog/puppy treats

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive May 2004: Looking for SMALL dog/puppy treats
By Cat on Wednesday, May 26, 2004 - 09:45 am:

Any suggestions for treats for a very small dog/puppy? Lucky is only about 5lbs and most all the treats the stores have are almost a meal for him! lol I did get some Milk Bone treats and some Scooby Snacks, but I'm having to cut/break them in half, and even then they're big (and they crumble). Should I just get some kibble/dog food and give him one piece? What brand/kind do I get? I've thought of getting Pupperoni sticks and cutting them into little pieces, but am afraid they'll just crumble. We'd like to use treats for training (potty--he's doing REALLY well!, tricks, etc.). Any suggestions would be great. Everyone's loving him! I have one little day care guy who will be 2 next month and he absolutely loves him! *N* has a dog, but it's a retriever and it's really big so *N* doesn't get to play with it much. The cats are coming around, slowly! lol Lucky will chase them to play and they run away. Every now and then one will hiss at him, but they are just pretty much annoyed by him. He's no threat to them since they're both 2-3 times his size right now. He has a "well puppy check" this Saturday. He's a lot of work (I had to take him out 1/2 a dozen times this morning, but no accidents!), but loads of fun. :)

If you are using them for training, try pieces of cheese or hot dog.

My dogs loved Beggin Strips. Thats what we gave our Min-Pin. She wasn't even 5 pounds when we rescured her!

I have a very small dog (yorkshire terrior) and because he is so small the vet really has us watch his weight. Treats can be very high in calories and if you are giving several a day (for training) it can be a problem. He has had us switch to cherrios cereal!! LOL I know that sounds strange, but he said dogs don't really care what you give them as long as it is a reward!! I have found that to be true. Little Rocky gets just as excited to see the cherrios box and he did the treat box!! It would be perfect for your puppy because they are small!! Maybe give it a try!!

Puppies really need something to chew on that will last a while and will keep them out of trouble. I found that out the hard way! I bought my dog rawhide bones, but DON'T get the kind with the knots in the ends- those ends detach from the straight part of bone and the puppy can choke on them. They do make rawhide in a straight bone. I found mine at Meijers in the bulk food section. You could probably find them at a pet supply store, or in the pet supply section at KMart or something.

Thanx! We're not going to be giving him people food, so I hadn't even thought about cheese, hot dogs or cherrios for a treat. He's already eating little bits of crackers and crumbs that get dropped on the floor (and with the day care kids there are plenty of those!). He's probably love cherrios. I'll give it a try. :)

He has LOTS of chew toys. We had to go to Wal-Mart the day we got him to get toys. Well, that's what the boys thought anyway. lol We also got him a bag of the rawhides sticks. I figured the bones would be too big for him--didn't think about him breaking the ends off and choking--thanx for the warning. He also has a blanket he stole from me (little baby blanket) and his dog bed that we'd origanally bought for the cats but they won't have anything to do with it so now it's his. He drags that thing around the house. Sometimes it flips over on top of him! He loves it, though.

Thanx again for the suggestions. You all are the greatest! :)

I just gave him a cherrio a little while ago for "doing his thing" outside! He gobbled it up! He is so smart. We went out because he was walking in little circles at the door and looking at me. He will whimper or bark if you don't notice him right away. So we go outside and he finds a small deflated rubber ball (want to guess how it got deflated??? lol) and he starts to play with it. I took it and said, "No, Lucky. Tee-tee." That's our command word for, well, you know. :) So he runs to the corner of the grass, does a couple of circles and goes. Then he runs back to me, I pet him and praise him and ask if he has anything else to do. So he runs back down, sniffs for a few seconds and does that, too! He hasn't had any accidents in the house for going on three days now. He even holds it all night (he's still sleeping in the bathroom downstairs, but won't use the papers). Maybe we're the "Lucky" ones if he's going to be this easy to train. Too bad all kids can't be that way (although my youngest was--oldest certainly wasn't!).

Rayanne, I love your little dog! My mom has a silkie terrier that's about 7lbs named Buddy. Oh, and our cat is named Gizmo--except he's about 15-16lbs (at just 16months!!!). Too cute! :)

We give our puppy Shih Tzu the cherrios too - he loves them! Another good treat is the "Greenie" chew bone - it is edible - they come in different sizes - found in PetSmart or PetCo stores. Good luck - our puppy is 5 months old and still working on the training thing.
