Talk me out of it

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive May 2004: Talk me out of it
By Sunny on Friday, May 21, 2004 - 01:34 pm:

I was reading the paper yeterday and there was a story about our local SPCA. This is kitten season and they are overwhelmed with kittens and cats. It stated that sometimes they have to put some of the animals down to make room. :(

I want so much to adopt another cat, but I'm not sure I should. We already have a dog and cat.

This is what I get for reading the newspaper. :)

By Emily7 on Friday, May 21, 2004 - 01:51 pm:

I can't talk you out of it, I love animals!

By Lauram on Friday, May 21, 2004 - 02:03 pm:

Well, we have a dog and two cats. Up until last fall we had 3 cats and a dog. I wouldn't get another animal- especially not a dog (too much work). I love cats, but my kids are having asthma issues, so I wouldn't get another cat either. Cats are pretty easy to take care of though.....

By Sue3 on Friday, May 21, 2004 - 02:08 pm:

OH , just get one !He or she will keep the other one company.

By Vicki on Friday, May 21, 2004 - 02:14 pm:

I agree, two cats really are all that much more work than one!!! I don't think your going to get too many people talking you out of it!! LOL

By Vicki on Friday, May 21, 2004 - 02:14 pm:

oops...that should say two cats really ARE NOT!! Really, I am trying not to talk you out of it!! LOL

By Amecmom on Friday, May 21, 2004 - 03:40 pm:

Two cats ... double the hair, double the mess, double the paw prints on your countertop ... Not to mention kittenhood! You did say try and talk you out of it:).

We have a dog and 3 cats and it is a lot more work. More poop in the cat box more hair around the house. I do have to add that it's one more little kitty to cuddle but if it were up to me I would say stick with one! :)

By Boxzgrl on Friday, May 21, 2004 - 03:53 pm:

Just get one! Just think, do you *really* have to put too much effort into your one kitty now? And dont they already come fixed ftom the SPCA or you get a free spay or neuter? I have 3 cats and the only difference I noticed between 3 and 1 is that I clean the litter box everyday instead of every 2-3 days like before. No biggie. And its so much fun watching them play!!!
Just think: Save a kittys life!

(Not that *i'm* trying to talk you into either!!):)

I want a cat so much but DH doesn't like them. So get one and you can say it's for me, but you can keep it:)

By Echo on Friday, May 21, 2004 - 05:04 pm:

I have two cats and a dog. I love them all so much, but there's hair everywhere, and the cats always find some way to wake the baby up, either by meowing REALLY loud, throwing up really loud, OVER AND OVER, running really loud, or scratching at the carpet somewhere really loud. The dog is more or less like another child, and I have to continually watch for him bringing bits of food and other suprises for the baby. (He likes to share with her, sounds cute, isn't all that great)

Animals are great. They were a lot greater before I had a baby. Would I ever get rid of mine? NO. Do I ever think about how much easier my life would be without them? YES And when my daughter one day comes wide-eyed into the house carrying a little bundle of fur she found abandoned somewhere, am I going to be able to say no to her? ABSOLUTELY NOT

Good luck.

I'd say go for it. It may be a little more work, but the cats will have each other to play with. I'm not much for talking you out of it either. Ok, I'll try... Kittens like to climb your curtains, and bat at your feet, not to mention anything else that moves. You remember how crazy they can be, you will be minding your own business and he'll jump out of no where and attach to your leg? (Happened to me at my girlfriend's house last night!!) Oh, and twice the litter tracks on the floor. There... I tried!! :)

If DS's asthma wasn't an issue I'd get another kitty in a heart beat. We had 5 cats at one time. I admit 5 required a lot of work, but 3 or 4 wasn't too bad. Worth it for all the meows, nudges and purrs in return. Can you tell I love cats?! text description

Doesn't sound like anyone did a very good job of talking you out of it. So let us know when you get your new kitty and what you named it. ;)

By Mommyathome on Saturday, May 22, 2004 - 10:36 pm:

Kittens are my weekness. I just wish they would stay kittens :) They are so adorable.
We currently have 1 kitty cat. He's 18 months old. He's very loveable. We trained him to go outside to potty, so we have no catbox to deal with!

Just get one!!! And, be sure to post pictures :)

ok i will talk you out i dont like cats! avid dog lover.
more kitty litter smell another making a mess more food to buy, your furniture a scratching opst.
if you really love them & are ready you should go fir it if it were a dog i would say send it here

By Bellajoe on Sunday, May 23, 2004 - 08:49 am:

More fur to vacuum and swiffer, double the amount of people that can't come over because they are allergic, 2 cats, double the dander. Double the stinky poop in the litter box, more cat to scratch your furniture, more food to buy, more animals on your furniture...etc. etc.

Sorry, I am allergic to cats and don't really like them anyway.

You DID say to talk you out of it :)

I like dogs much more than cats.

By Dawnk777 on Sunday, May 23, 2004 - 11:50 am:

Our local shelter is overflowing with cats. They are having a Memorial Day special with cats costing only $31 and you can get 2 for the price of one! Would love to help out, but DH is allergic to cats and after only a few hours in a house with a cat, he is miserable, so not an option for us.

By Colette on Sunday, May 23, 2004 - 12:07 pm:

My oldest and I volunteer at a cat shelter on Sundays and we just got back. They are overrun with kittens - at least 15-20- most going to kitten foster homes. They were soooo cute.

I think 5 cats would be less work than one dog.

By Momoffour on Sunday, May 23, 2004 - 05:25 pm:

For mothers day my hubby and kids got me a kitten she is so pretty . Well a few days ago I became a momma to 2 tiny kittens that there mom didn't want I guess. So I bottle feed them every couple hours all day and night and I keep telling myself don't get attached but its getting harder and harder. I love cats we also have a dog. 3 fish tanks and 3 cats that I guess came with the house when we bought it

By Yjja123 on Sunday, May 23, 2004 - 06:30 pm:

I used to volunteer at the ASPCA and then for a feline rescue---very dangerous for an animal lover like myself.
We currently have 2 dogs & 4 cats. That seems to be my maximum. I had 5 cats at one time. It was too much. I fostered a third dog for a while and that was too many dogs (granted I have big dogs). Maybe its just the odd number but it just didn't seem right.
I really do not think there is much difference in work load with 1 cat or 4 cats. I vacuum every day regardless how many animals are here --I am allergic---oops :) and actually my dogs (chow mixes) shed more than the cats do.
I think animals need companions too. The cats chase each other and play together (they are even known to play with the dogs).
Yep--no talking ya out of it here. I SAY GO FOR IT! The more the merrier. LOL
Let us know what you decide.
Yvonne

I still haven't decided. I got so busy over the weekend that I wouldn't have had the time to get to the SPCA anyway.

I'll let you all know, though, if I do decide to adopt! :)
