Birth Control Shot...

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive May 2004: Birth Control Shot...
By Emily7 on Friday, May 21, 2004 - 12:13 pm:

I went & got my shot on Wed, its only my second shot. Yesterday I cried so much that I broke every blood vessel in my face. I almost felt like I was going through post-partum depression (which I have been lucky to avoid this time). Is this a normal reaction to the shot??? I have had a lot of things on my plate this week, but nothing that should have made cry so much.

By Janet on Friday, May 21, 2004 - 12:30 pm:

Are you talking about Depo-Provera? I had it one time (it's been about 10 years ago, though) and it made me so crazy I vowed never again! I cried, I was angry, I was on edge...it was like having three months of PMS and I felt like I was just losing my mind. Is it normal? I have no idea, but it sounds like you and I reacted in similar ways.

I also had the depo shot and I WOULD never take it again. I started it after my first was born and it was terrible. mood swings weight gain. I also had a very rough time getting pregnate with my second due to the shot. I wouldnt reccomend it to anyone.

Me too - although I thought it was the stress of 3 little kids that made me feel like that. I was on it for a while before I realized the shot was making me so angry. I would never take that again.

I took this after the birth of my last baby. I only took one shot because my hubby got a vasectomy. Anyway, I would never do the shot again if I needed birth control. I hated it! It made me feel insane, hungry, and completly messed up my regular period. I've been off the shot for 5 months and I still have'nt had a normal period! After I went off the shot I would have a 13-16 days period, then stop for a week or 2 then start again! Now my period come at the right time each month, but they last for about 7 days, stop for about 3, then start again for about 2 more days. It's getting better slowly. Normally I go every 28-29 days for about 6 days. I used to take the pill and NEVER had a problem with it.

It took me several years before my periods went back to normal.

By Palmbchprincess on Friday, May 21, 2004 - 01:43 pm:

I have been on it 2 different times, once for a year, and once just 3 months. Both times it kinda whacked me out, moody, a little hysterical, like Janet said, PMS for three months. The second time I went on it, after I had the kids, my gums receeded BADLY, and bled the whole 3 months. I LOVED not having my period, but it took forever to go back to normal the first time. I think it is not worth the mood swings. I hope you are feeling better soon!!!

I was on the shot for 7 years (no period), and the FIRST month i came off, i got my period and was pregnant the next month! I gained weight but that was my only problem. After ds was born my periods went right back to normal but then i tried the new patch, stopped it in august so we could have our baby and well i haven't had my period since! Had them normal on the patch but then they stopped when i stopped the patch. Still trying to figure out why so we can have this baby!

Kenna go have your thyriod checked. That can cause problems with your cycle. I was so grateful when I was finally diagnosed with hypothryiodism.

I know there are alot of people here saying don't take the shot, so you don't need me to say it too. But, I wouldn't recommend it to anyone! I am sure it is different for everyone, but I never had a period while on it and then it took almost a year to get one back. We were trying to get pregnant for the first time when I stopped the shot, and it took a little over a year to get pregnant! I will never take it again, although it was quite convenient. But, it is everyone's personal decision.

By Truestori on Friday, May 21, 2004 - 05:24 pm:

I'm actually a Depo Baby!! My mom was in the trial stages and the doctors told her a big long story about how she wouldn't get pregooo..yada..yada..LOL

I took the shot and hated it! I am the opposite of everyone else because I had my period on going for months. I too, became pregnant right after I stopped it! Oh and did I mention the 30lbs I gained...YUCK

By Karen~moderator on Friday, May 21, 2004 - 05:50 pm:

My sister tried this and had a horrible experience with it. I've never personally taken it, but based on her experience, I'd never recommend it to anyone. She was horribly depressed, she developed acne, and gained about 30 pounds.

Stori and I have similar stories as far as our personal stories go. Period for months at a time and conceived dd when I was 2 weeks late for my next shot. I also gained a bunch of weight and was an emotional mess. I definitely would choose something else. I just don't see the pros outweighing the cons.

By Dananivyboo1 on Friday, May 21, 2004 - 09:34 pm:

Tried the Depo when I first went on birth control and they told me to wait a year for my period to regulate. I waited about 8months and got sick of it since it would last at least 2 weeks/month.

Been on the patch ever since my son has been born and I like it much much better than pills or the shot.

By Melana on Friday, May 21, 2004 - 10:52 pm:

I was on the shot for two years, off for three months and then got pregnant! I personally LOVED the shot, no periods, I didn't have a problem with hormones, no PMS....and most of all I only had to take it once every three months, I hate having to remember to take a pill. I don't know if I'll go back on it when this one's born, probably though.

Emily,
can hyperthyroid make your cycle out of whack? I'm borderline, and I've been getting my periods too often since getting off the shot. (My bloodwork for thyroid was done while I was on it) I guess I should go back to the Dr....

Crystal
Mood swings, weight gain, hair loss, periods that are crazy are a few symptoms. I was tested 3 or 4 times before it actually showed up. With my periods I would have them for 6 months & not have one for a year or two. But you are also going through a lot with your divorce, stress can mess your cycle up as well.

OK i am one of the few .... this is my 2nd time on the shot (wish that i would of stayed on it the 1st time) I love it. Always the first 3-6 months i have some weight gain, but I usually drop it. When i was on it after my 1st (7 yrs ago) NO PROBLEMS at all. took me about 4 yrs after taking it to have the 2nd which was ok with me ( i took it about 2.5 yrs 1st time) i love the no periods ... did take a couple of years to get my periods bac k(i did not mind :))
this time i have been on it for about 4 months, little moody but i think it is cause of the lawsuit with the hospital & all that i went though with the birth.
i am sorry that sooo many people had problems with it -- ifeel so lucky reading through all your post that it did not affect me like that.
& the depo baby -- we had sex 3 times a day atleast 4 -5 times a week & no baby for almost 4 yrs. :) i am fertile (use to be before the shot) & he is VERY fertile.
Everyones body is just soooo different though !
