Adult vaccine question

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive May 2004: Adult vaccine question
By Christylee on Wednesday, May 19, 2004 - 09:16 am:

Monday I had to go and get a Hep B shot for school, also since I have a comprimised immune system at some degree I decided to ahead and have the pnemonia shot that lasts five years.

I had no sort of reaction to the Hep B shot but the arm the other shot is in his hurting terribly. I have red splotches on it (which I'm assuming are hives) tenderness from the shoulder to the wrist all the way around and even down my side of the breast area. I can't raise my arm above about half way because of extreme pain almost to the point of tears. It is also swollen and hot to touch.

I called my doctor and he said to take ibuprofren (sp) and do hot compresses and I've been doing them since yesterday morning with no relief. I wasn't able to do lab yesterday at school and my house is a wreck because of the pain. Anyone ever had a reaction to something like this or ever hear/read about this? I've never had any type of reaction allergic or otherwise to anything so I'm not sure this is what it is. Any help would be greatly appreciated. TIA

You might try Benadryl, but I think I might call back your doctor to have him look at it.

Many vaccinations with "live" virus/bacteria are contraindicated for people with compromised immune systems. I don't know what kind of shot you received. Did the doctor mention anything about possible reactions due to your immune system issue?

On the reaction you should try vitamin C in 1000mg tablets. It is an anti-inflammatory. You may need several over a few hour period.

However, I agree with the previous poster...if you're not feeling better I'd definately see the doctor again.

I had the pnemonia shot back in the fall and didn't have any kind of reaction to it at all. There is no live virus/bacteria in the shot according to my doctor and also the flu shot no longer is either.
If it keeps bothing you I would recall the doctor and if your not satisfied with your results contact someone else in the medical feild.

Ditto . Call the Doc again and ask to be seen! If he can't, then go to someone else. Feel better and let us know how you are doing.
