Sitting here listening to..................

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive May 2004: Sitting here listening to..................
By Karen~moderator on Saturday, May 15, 2004 - 09:09 am:

water lapping at my back doorstep. UGH! It has rained for what seems like FOREVER here. It is raining so hard that my back yard is flooded - again - and the water is up to the top of the back door ledge. I am so worried it's going to come into the house. :-(

Anyone living in S. Louisiana right now is pretty much dealing with this. My cousin had to be evacuated this week from her house in S.W. Louisiana because the water was so high. Her house is raised and not on a slab so at least her house kept dry.

Pamt, if you are reading this, how has it been in B.R.??

By Kernkate on Saturday, May 15, 2004 - 09:19 am:

Karen that is awful...just hope it stays out.
Hope your weather will dry up soon.

By Bobbie~moderatr on Saturday, May 15, 2004 - 09:34 am:

By Bea on Saturday, May 15, 2004 - 12:30 pm:

Praying hard that the rain stops and the flooding recedes soon.

By Sue3 on Saturday, May 15, 2004 - 02:23 pm:

By Trina~moderator on Saturday, May 15, 2004 - 05:36 pm:

Oh No! Karen, I hope the water recedes soon! Times like this make me glad we live on top of a hill. Stinks during winter months but good when it comes to flooding. {{{HUGS}}}

By Karen~moderator on Saturday, May 15, 2004 - 07:12 pm:

Emily, my aunt is doing better, thanks for asking!

My friend who I spent the day with in the ER 2 weeks ago had to have emergency surgery yesterday. I went to see her this morning and found out that her car got 8" of water in it last night, and their house nearly flooded.

Tomorrow the weather is SUPPOSED to be better............

By Texannie on Saturday, May 15, 2004 - 07:55 pm:

Karen, it's just gorgeous here. We were all stunned when we woke up this am. So hopefully it's headed your way now.

By Karen~moderator on Saturday, May 15, 2004 - 09:09 pm:

Well, just watched the weather, supposedly tomorrow is going to start out *OK*, and get worse......

We just ran hoses in the back yard to help siphon off the water.

My friend whose car flooded - her subdivision made the evening news. Almost everyone living in the part of the subdivision she lives in had flooded cars and some had flooded homes.

By Pamt on Saturday, May 15, 2004 - 09:32 pm:

We've had rains by the bucketfuls too. I've enjoyed the sound of it, but at one point this afternoon we had about 3-4 inches of standing water on our back patio. The neighbors behind us have pools of standing water in their back yard. On Wednesday the street where our clinic is was flooded. I don't watch the news so I don't know if any streets have been closed or anything...and I'm staying put high and dry at home. We did purposefully pick out a home that is not in a flood zone, but when you live in a state that is below sea level that may not mean much. I have heard that New Orleons proper is expected to be gone totally in about 100 years from flooding. Yikes!! Stay dry!

By Pamt on Saturday, May 15, 2004 - 09:33 pm:

New OrleAns...*sigh*

By Texannie on Saturday, May 15, 2004 - 11:10 pm:

How many days of rain have ya'll had? We were 3 days. Fortunately, the bayous seemed to hold so we didn't have massive flooding. Like I said, it was a surprise to wake up to good weather today (it was supposed to rain all weekend and they had already declared some emergency situations) so maybe you guys will see it happen there.

By Emily7 on Saturday, May 15, 2004 - 11:20 pm:

I am so glad we don't get rain like that. I feel bad that I was upset that we had a small amount of snow this week.

Karen I am glad your Aunt is doing better! I will keep you guys in my thoughts. Hopefully the rain will stop soon!

By Pamt on Sunday, May 16, 2004 - 10:42 am:

It has rained every day since Monday, but we have had some patches of sunny weather mingled in and other days of nothing but rain all day. Right now it is beautifully sunny, but we'll see.....

By Texannie on Sunday, May 16, 2004 - 11:08 am:

Hope it stays that way! Did ya'll have the amazing lightening and thunder too? I thought our house was going to shake apart!

By Karen~moderator on Sunday, May 16, 2004 - 11:47 am:

Texannie, I HATE the lightning and thunderstorms!!!! It's been so bad that the house shakes, and the lightning TOTALLY lights up a room in the middle of the night.

By Andi on Sunday, May 16, 2004 - 12:39 pm:

Karen I had no idea all of that was going on. Maybe I should watch the news once in a while :).

Hope things get better soon and the rain GOES AWAY!

By Pamt on Sunday, May 16, 2004 - 04:37 pm:

Spoke too soon...been raining off and on since 11:30. :(

By Bobbie~moderatr on Sunday, May 16, 2004 - 11:12 pm:

Karen, have you floated away yet?????

By Karen~moderator on Monday, May 17, 2004 - 07:44 am:

We have actually dried out a bit!!!!!!!!!!! YAY!!!!!!!!!!!

ALTHOUGH........I have not watched the news yet........LOL

By Karen~moderator on Monday, May 17, 2004 - 07:46 am:

I went to see my friend yesterday, who was in the hospital when it flooded. Her poor car!!!!! Her DH showed me photos he took (he's an insurance adjuster!) of the area - they came *this* close to getting water in their house. You can see the waterline all around her car - it's about 8" above the bottom of the car doors.

By Texannie on Monday, May 17, 2004 - 08:07 am:

Glad you are drying out a bit! Yikes for your friend.

By Bobbie~moderatr on Monday, May 17, 2004 - 11:18 pm:

Still dry???? And we had our van flood out the first year we lived here.

By Karen~moderator on Tuesday, May 18, 2004 - 08:13 am:

No........another wet night......but we had our siphons out so everything's OK.

The thing I'm starting to have concern over is the overall water levels all around us. We live one block off the Mississippi River. When I was going across the river last weekend to visit my friend in the hospital, I was shocked to see how high the river was.

Even when it's not raining, water is constantly seeping from the levee right now because all the grounds are so saturated from all the rains. The levee is all that keeps the river from overflowing and totally flooding the entire area.

Yesterday morning when I was driving to work, I saw 3 separate parish/state crews on the levee, apparently surveying and checking the overall state of things. It's kind of freaky............

By Texannie on Tuesday, May 18, 2004 - 08:57 am:

Came in here to check on you when I saw the weather reports. We had more rain yesterday, but more boomer and light than rain. We are close to running out of our banks if we get more rain, but no where near ya'lls concern. Keeping my fingers crossed for you!
