Need quick advice :)

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive May 2004: Need quick advice :)
By Mommyathome on Monday, May 10, 2004 - 04:54 pm:

I told a friend that I would watch her DD tomorrow while she works. It's just for a couple of hours.
I called today to verify that I was still watching her and I am. She then proceeds to tell me that her older daughter stayed home from school today and they took her to the DR. She has strep throat.
So, I asked if "T" (her other DD that I am tending tomorrow) had strep too. She said "no, and "T" is on antibiotics for something else and so she won't catch the strep throat".
I said "OK...as long as my kids won't get sick".

So, I'm just wondering now if my kids could catch strep through "T"??? I have a very busy week this week and a major even going on that I am co-directing on Saturday, then we leave early Sunday for a week long vacation to California. I DO NOT WANT MY KIDS SICK.

What is your opinion on this? Do you think that my kids can still get strep? I would love to hear your thoughts. If the concensus is that it's risky, I will need to call her back this afternoon and tell her I can't watch her DD.
Thanks :)

I'd call your dr and see what he or she says.

If "T" is on antibiotics, I'm sure it will be just fine. I do understand your concern.:)

I think it would be ok, also, but a call to your Dr. would set your mind at ease more than our opinions.

Since "T" is already on antibiotics, chances are, she's not infectious. However, use precautions for your children. Not drink or snack sharing, keep them outside if the weather is nice, have your kids wash their hands frequently.
Also, you might (depending on their ages) want to have them gargle with some Listerine or other antibacterial mouthwash before they go to bed, just as a precaution. Be sure they take a bath that night also.
Of course, non of it could work, but at least you will have tried.
You never really know if the kids your kids are playing with are sick, since most illness is contagious before there are any symptoms at all. Sending good health vibes ...

Thanks :) I guess I'll just watch her, thought I'm not looking forward to it LOL.
I'll be sure to keep my kids washed up! Thanks.

As long as your dks don't drink or eat after her, then they should be fine. Especially, if "T" is already on antibiotics. Also, like someone else suggested, make sure they wash their hands before eating, etc.
