Jasmine is in heat

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive May 2004: Jasmine is in heat

They couldn't do her spay surgery today, because they discovered she was in heat. I think it just started today, because I don't remember noticing a bloody discharge yesterday. According to sources on the internet, this is a long process. We don't have a fenced-in yard, so unwanted visitors could come here. So, we will continue taking her outside with us, which we were doing anyway, since when she is tied up outside, she doesn't go potty and wants us out there with her. I can't remember if the male dog next door is fixed or not. He is always in his kennel unless his owner has him out in the yard to play.

We don't really have dogs wandering around loose that I know of, but I don't want to find out now.

She is in her crate currently because she was already given the pre-op sedative, so she is sleeping it off. She is very subdued right now. Like she is there enough to notice us in the same room with her, but I would be afraid of her falling down the steps, since she is pretty clumsy. I imagine she is going to be pretty hungry when the medicine wears off.

So, does this mean we can't take her for walks now, or what, though? My childhood dog was a male, unfixed as far as I can remember. Honey was already spayed when we got her, so I just have no clue what we are supposed to do or not do with her.

The other "fun" thing about this is, she is having a bloody discharge that got on the kitchen floor when she was sitting before we got her into the crate. Ugh.

So, everyday is an adventure!

OH yuck! I remember when I first got my cat and she went into heat. The howling and "presenting" every time we pet her was enough to drive everyone crazy. I think you can bring them to the vet and leave them until they do the spaying.

You can walk her, but it would be a good idea to carry a long stick, in case some male dog gets too persistent. They do sell doggy diapers for the discharge. My in-laws used a pair of baby training pants on their dog, with a hole cut out for the tail.

I used diapers, but they actually make a "doggie diaper" for this.

Oh dear! That's all you would need is puppies! The doggy diapers sound cute :)

We found something at the pet store to deal with the discharge. I don't think Jasmine is all the impressed with it, but I don't want to have to be constantly cleaning up after her, so she will have to live with it.

I don't know if I want to carry a long stick! LOL!

If you walk her Dawn you might want to carry a long stick.:) I remember having our dog Shera and when she was in heat I took her for a walk and I think all the male dogs in the neighborhood knew it. As soon as I hit home I had 3 male dogs in the backyard howling. Luckily I had gotten her in the house by that time.
