Has anyone had a dental implant?

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive April 2004: Has anyone had a dental implant?

Unfortunately, I had to pull a tooth which just underwent a root canal. It was the the last molar on the top (already had my wisdom tooth pulled). Now I'm faced with having to get a an implant there and was shocked at the cost. Just wondering if anyone has had one and if so, how was the procedure?

Yikes! I have read about them, but never had one.
My DH had one of his molars pulled quite a few years ago. It was on top and was in the very back (he also already had his wisdom teeth out). The dentist didn't even suggest an implant. He said that since it was in the back, that it most likely wouldn't affect the structure of DH's teeth (wouldn't make them slide and become crooked). So, he opted to just let it be. He hasn't had any problems with it at all.
My cousin was hit by a car when he was 11, and lost his two front teeth (permanent). He has dental implants and they look great.

Robin -- That is great to know because I'm seriously considering not getting one if I don't absolutely have to. So far the implant/restoration and they would need to do some bone grafting to secure the screw is running close to $6,000 and up. For ONE tooth. Can you believe that?? I already spent $1300 on the root canal last month trying to save it. They are telling me I need it because the tooth that was underneath the missing one has nothing to grind against. I don't see how that is a problem but did your dh have a tooth underneath the missing one, too?
