Question for Adoptive Parents
DH and I were asked to write a letter of recommendation for friends who are starting the adoption process. (International) I'm just wondering what agencies are looking for? Is there anything specific? I imagine they just want to know they are of good character. Any advice would be so helpful. Thanks.
How long you have known them and in what capacity. Have you seen them around children? If so, how do they treat them? What you think their best qualities are. Why you think they will make good parents. Any particular activities/hobbies that have that will contribute to their parenting. What kind of support system do they have in place?
I'm not an adoptive parent, but your question reminded me of that episode of Friends where Joey wrote a letter for Monica and Chandler and the agency thought it was written by a child. Sorry, for butting in, you may now go back to regular posting! :-)
Each of our letters was a bit different. We got them from family, friends, my Godmother and our minister. They all talked about how they knew us, how long, and mentioned all of the things that Texannie mentioned. They might have also been sent some questions to use as a guideline, but that might have been for our fostering homestudy. Either way, they were both looking for the same sort of things.
Texannie covered just about everything they would be looking for. Just out of the curosity (we are a family made through international adoption)what country are your friends adopting from?
Thank you all so much. That does really help to have an idea of what they are looking for. I would not have even thought about hobbies and such. He is a teacher, so I can really write a lot about the afterschool activities he does as well. I have a few months, but I thought I would get some good advice here! I was right! Tammie-I believe they are going through Korea. I think they will try to adopt 2 children. I don't know too many specifics as the process has just started for them. They are still meeting with agencies, but I think they found the one they want to use. The patience you must have to have to adopt! Pheew! I hope the path to their children is well lit! Thanks again everyone. It gives me lots to think about!
I am sure you will write a fantastic letter! Good luck to them!
