11 month old not eating
I rarely post here, but I do have a question: My 11 month old has eaten very little since the beginning of this past weekend. Some days she eats farely decent and then other days she barely eats. I am still nursing, except for her noon feeding in which I give her pediasure (we are having trouble with her losing weight and so she has been on this per dr. for about a month now). Well, now she won't really drink it and tonight she turns her head when we even try to give her real food. Like today, she nursed this am, ate some cereal, some fruit, 4 ounces pediasure and then won't nurse tonight or eat real food. Should I call the nurse tomorrow or just not worry about it? I probably wouldn't normally be worried, but since she has trouble losing weight to begin with, I don't want her getting too small. And I was also just at the dr last week because she had a high fever (over 103) for 3 days, which actually ended up lasting 5 or so days. (We are at the dr all the time so I really don't if I am just being paranoid) Thanks!
I know my son goes through some spurts like that, and it could last around a week usually around the time he just finished getting sick etc. But I think it ends up during mainly teething time, but call the nurse/doctor just to be sure its nothing else.
It very well could be teething. My DD also went stages of not eating. Do you notice red puffy cheeks? My little one was alway red cheeked and even hot cheeked during those times of not eating and teething. Probably something very normal for your child to go thru, but since she has trouble with weight, I would call the office anyway. Better safe than sorry.
Call the office. Let them examine her. My little one goes through spells of not eating when he's sick and just before he shows symptoms of being sick. I hope she feels better. Ame
I would bring her to the doctor again. They might prescribe high calorie drink.
Maybe she still isn't feeling well. Have you been keeping a record of what she's been eating and when? Sometimes, it doesn't seem like much until you start writing it down. Do you offer her a variety of different foods to try? Are you offering her food throughout the day? Does she still nurse whenever she wants to? I'm just thinking aloud. These are all questions I think the doctor would ask. There is nothing more reassuring than having the doctor examine her and telling you she's fine, so I'd call the office if you are really concerned. But, I'm curious if her development has been consistent. I know I was concerned about my one son's growth and brought it up to the doctor many times, only to be told that he was consistently measuring on the 10th percentile and they weren't concerned as long as he showed an established pattern. He's still not a big kid, but hasn't gone through puberty yet, so you never know. Please post back and let us know how your daughter is doing.
I too would at least give the doctor a call and share your concerns. It wouldn't concern me as much if she wasn't already having the problems of loosing weight. All kids go through periods of eating less than normal and then next week, they will eat like a horse. But with her already having problems, it would concern me too!
Well, I called this am and they wanted her in for a weight check. I took her in and she had lost weight again. The ped. was really nice--he said to try not forcing her to eat, that maybe she just wants to do it on her own. So we will try that and go back in about a month to re-weigh her. Thanks everyone!
Gd luck and keep us posted.
I would switch the pediasure until night time. It has more calories than formula and food, so she just might not be hungry enough to eat after having it. If she has it in the evening, she'll have all night to use those calories, so she'll be hungry in the morning.
Is she still nursing a lot at night? My daughter will often hardly eat anything during the day if I allow her to nurse several times at night. But if she doesn't nurse through the night, she eats better. Just a thought. But maybe to make you feel better, I feel like it's a wonderful accomplishment if I get my daughter to eat half a jar of baby food. Doesn't happen often. Usually it'll take her 2 days to finish one jar. That's 4 meals. Good luck.
