Purchasing prescriptions from outside the US??
Are there any members (or their family members) who live in the U.S. and purchase their prescriptions in other countries - like Canada or Mexico, etc? If you do, how much cheaper are they, is U.S. insurance accepted, are they the same quality/same drugs and how did you go about it?
I never have and I can't speak about Canada, but I know in Central America that the drugs are NOT the same quality and/or strength. Very risky! As much as a pain as they can be sometimes, the FDA is a very good thing.
We were wondering strictly from a financial standpoint. Even WITH insurance, our monthly medical/prescription copays are outrageous.
I haven't myself, but if I did, I would go with Canada, not Mexico. And I know that many people do. My sister checked into it after the company she works for ditched their insurance with no notice. She found it was so much cheaper. I'd try to get an ingredient list of both the drugs from the states and the drugs from Canada.
My grandparents get allot (80%) of their meds from Canada. It saves them a ton each month. They looked into this for over 6 months before they did it and now they love it. The meds are the same here and there so they are not getting any knock off meds. My grandparents found this all out from their Dr's here in the states. Ask your Dr I bet they might have some information for you. Good luck.
I thought they were trying to make this harder to do? I can't remember what I read about it now, been a few months back. I can tell you that my Grandparents use to get pain meds for their DOG from Mexico. It was cheaper for them. In Costa Rica the drugs that I used were not that great in comparison to the ones I like to use here in the states. And they were priced high like here. For a box of 15 pills (they only sold them in small amts) it was $60 for one of my meds. So for a month supply I had to pay $120 out of pocket. Good luck and let us know what you find out.
I've been looking into it as well, so I'm interested in hearing the responses. Anyone know of particular companies to use?
Do the people who do this order from the pharmaceutical companies, or from pharmacies here?
My BIL purchases from Canada. Don't know the details, I just know they have several scripts (esp for allergies) and he goes outside to get them.
Marcia, I'd like to know that too. We were speaking with someone in the past week who travels to Mexico fairly often and gets his meds there.
my grandparents alway went across the border and bought antibiotics. I am not sure if they got other meds there. They both died of bone cancer, probably not a link...but I guess you never know!
Our meds are the same as there, but some of the stuff you can buy off the shelf is prescription here. If I had to pay for amoxil for one of my kids, it would probably cost me about $15. I don't know how much any of our regular meds cost, because we have coverage.
Karen check out this site http://www.canadadrugstop.com/faq.htm
I have a friend who is a nurse practioner in the US but lives here in Canada (we are only 25 minutes from the US). I remember him telling me that Walmart in Maine has a of drugs about 4 pages in length that are $4.00. You might want to check in to that.
I checked the drugs that WalMart offers for $4.00 - there are only a couple of the ones we take that are offered, and then one of them, we get for less than $5.00 anyway. I checked the link Yvonne provided and the prices seem very high, and most of our drugs aren't available. :-( We spend a fortune in just CO-PAYS each month, I'm trying to find a way to cut our medical costs. Thanks for the input.
I clicked on the link above just for kicks and the website stated they match or beat all prices in Canada. Might want to check it out. Just in case the ad changes before you see this... http://www.canadianpharmacymeds.com/
