Cutting your Kids Hair.....is this ever a good Idea?

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive April 2004: Cutting your Kids Hair.....is this ever a good Idea?
By Coopaveryben on Tuesday, April 6, 2004 - 03:38 pm:

We are getting ready for my DS ball game and I thought he would be a lot cooler with shorter hair. Even when I was about to do it he asked me if I went to school to learn to do it...should have been my first tip off. Then the 17mo old wanted his cut too, after I did it to one of them why would I proceed to the next? But yup I did, they all have blonde/white hair and it ...well there's not much I can say but...YIKES! What loving mother would do this to her children?? I made a hair appointment for tommorrow, our hairdresser wasn't working today. My DH is going to be soooo mad, I'm not worried about him, he'll get over it. The third one was spared because he was taking a nap. My question is this, is this ever a good idea? Do any of you ever cut your kids hair.

By Marg on Tuesday, April 6, 2004 - 03:42 pm:

Yes, I cut out oldest dd, it's just one length and youngest dd's because she won't sit still for no one, lol!

It's just hair and it will grow back is my motto;)

The only time I ever cut my kids hair is when they want it all cut off, a crew cut. I am not good at cutting hair and would be afraid that I would mess it up big time. The crew cuts are easy, put the right size blade on and off I go. Then I trim the back of their necks and around their ears. Thats the extent of my hair cuts on my DS's on my DD I would never attempt it..
The only way to look at a mess up on hair , it will grow back.

By Melanie on Tuesday, April 6, 2004 - 03:45 pm:

LOL, I will never go near my kids heads with a pair of scissors. Nothing good could ever come of that. :)

By Kernkate on Tuesday, April 6, 2004 - 03:45 pm:

LOL Marg, two minds with a single thought:)

By Mommyathome on Tuesday, April 6, 2004 - 03:45 pm:

LOL :) It is reassuring to know it will grow back!
I cute my middle DD's (4) hair and my DS's (2) hair. I take my oldest DD to the salon. I do that because we usually keep it in a bob about to her shoulders. Her hair is very straight and shiny/silky and you can really tell if it's even just a little bit crooked.
My middle DD has naturally curly hair and it's long, so I just keep the ends trimmed.

*cut.......not cute!

Dh and I have always cut our boys hair. We have electric clippers with adjustable attachments. I cut dh's hair, too. He's military and has to get it trimmed at least every 2 weeks, so if we had to pay for that, well, $$$. If we had a little girl, I don't know if I'd cut her hair. My mom cut all our hair (me, two brothers and dad) until I was in high school. She still cuts my brothers' hair (they live right there). She has cut mine a couple times--like when I visit her or she visits me (she's in Michigan and I'm in Colorado). My grandmother (her mom) cut my mom's hair until she was in her 70's. Grandma would cut the back and my mom would cut the front and sides (yep, she'd cut her own hair). Blond or very light hair is SO hard to cut (one of my boys is blond) because it shows ALL the lines. Trust me, you haven't done any permanent damage. You should have seen dh's hair the first time I cut it. The barber's words the next day were, "Who butched you?" lol Hey, at least you didn't put a bowl on your kids head's! (dh's brother did that to their neice once--that was 25 years ago and they still get a good laugh about it!). Better luck next time. :)

My dd has straight hair. I do cut her bangs because if not, we would be there every 3 weeks to get them trimmed!! They are layered and I usually curl them, so you can't tell if I screw them up!! I will admit that I tried to trim the back of her hair once. I thought, I have watched them do it a million times, how hard can it be?? Well, I sectioned it all off just like I see them do and I proceeded to cut what I thought was a straight line....needles to say, it looked like I had a few drinks if that was straight!! LOL Thankfully I had heard enough horror stories to know not to even bother to try to fix it. I pulled it up into a pony tail and took her to the salon to have it fixed. The girl there got a good laugh about it and thankfully, we only had to take off about 1 inch to straighten it out. I was so glad I didn't try to fix it!! LOL Have never even attempted to do the back at home again!!

I tried and failed.

I trimmed DD's hair when she was a toddler. Poor kid! text description NEVER again! Now I leave it up to the professionals! LOL! Fortunately my best friend is a hair stylist. If she's not able to do it, because we live 4 hrs. apart, my local hair stylist will do it for $10 a kid. WORTH it!!

By Dawnk777 on Tuesday, April 6, 2004 - 07:02 pm:

Nope, never touched my kids hair with a scissors! Like someone else said, nothing good would come of that! I'm NOT a hair person! For Sarah's homecoming last fall, we left styling her hair to the professionals. I barely touch my own hair with a scissors, except to trim my bangs occasionally.

By Amecmom on Tuesday, April 6, 2004 - 07:24 pm:

I've been tempted. My son's hair his so long and curly that he gets mistaken for a girl. After your story and some of the other posts, I'll leave the cutting to the pros.

I have been the only one to cut my oldest DD's hair and she is nearly seven. Luckily, its just a chin length bob and I only cut a little off at a time. It could take forever but I cut 1/4 in. off and then let her run around for a while then cut off a little more. She knows when its haircut day, its really ALL day! You couldn't pay me enough to touch my son's and my youngest still hasn't had a haircut(she's nearly 3). Poor baby had no hair for the longest time

I have trimmed my daughters bangs but that is about it. I have a woman I work with and she cuts all three of her boys hair and has never gone to school for it...oh and my neighbor cuts her three boys hair also! LOL I guess if it turns out ok then go for it again.

I cut my boys' hair and my dh's hair. I use hair clippers with all the attachments. My dh says I do a good job. It's one of the few things that I'm actually good at, LOL

By Marcia on Tuesday, April 6, 2004 - 10:11 pm:

I cut their hair. I just trim the bangs and ends. If they need more, I have a friend who is a hair dresser, and she comes here.
While in FL a few weeks ago, I had mine cut. Nicole was with me, so I had hers done, too. She has thin, straight hair, and it always looks messy. I got the girl to do one long layer, to give it a bit of body. It looks nice on her. I'll keep taking her somewhere now, because I'm not about to attempt that!!

By Insaneusmcwife on Tuesday, April 6, 2004 - 10:42 pm:

I trim dd's bangs but that is the extent of it.

By Coopaveryben on Tuesday, April 6, 2004 - 11:01 pm:

You guys made me feel better. My middle DS said that the Baby hurt him today and my DH's reply was, "that's okay mommy punished him didn't she...she cut his hair."

We have a hair appointment tommorrow at 3:00 to get it fixed.

By Brandy on Tuesday, April 6, 2004 - 11:06 pm:

I sure do cut their hair and my mom get's mad about it but that's because sometimes we just buzz it all off lol.So now if she wants their hair cut she pays for it or i leave it to it get's too long like the other day and they were getting thier pictures taken at school on the same day as i cut it i'm glad i did a good job and no buzz either lol. I even got brave and cut my own hair i've always done my bangs but i needed a trim and so i did it myself lol.

By Bea on Tuesday, April 6, 2004 - 11:07 pm:

I bought a hair cutting kit when my boys were little. It had clippers with adjustable depth skids. I cut their hair until I went back to work. They were both in school by then. I think I did a pretty good job. I cut my own hair until I got this short cut a few years ago.

By Dawnk777 on Tuesday, April 6, 2004 - 11:46 pm:

My older dd got her first hair cut at about a year and she sat pretty good, too. My younger dd didn't get her hair cut until she was about 2! She just didn't have enough hair to cut!

By Mommyduncan on Tuesday, April 6, 2004 - 11:52 pm:

I used to cut my ds's hair, but once I took him to get it cut at my dd's hairdresser and he fell in love w/ her, so now he won't let me do it. Which is fine, he is getting older and getting fussy about his hair, so it was time to let someone else do it.

By Trina~moderator on Wednesday, April 7, 2004 - 06:52 am:

My Mom was a hairdresser and cut all our hair growing up. As a teenager I no longer liked how she did it. I paid to go to another hairdresser, and boy was she mad at first! LOL!

By Ladypeacek on Wednesday, April 7, 2004 - 06:58 am:

I do the bangs too, but nothing else. Once i trimmed my ds's hair a little over the ears but now he goes with my dh every week to get the trim. He doesn't really need it once a week he is only 19 months but he looks forward to it!

By Babysitbarb on Wednesday, April 7, 2004 - 09:44 am:

I cut both my DD's and my DH's hair but, Im also a licensed cometoligist. Im not working in a shop right now but, I still have my license and do my continued education every 4 years. I have done the book work and need to finish my other 8 hours of hands on for this year. My Dh gets his cut about every 2-3 weeks so it would get exspensive for us to have to go some where. The DD's have long hair and I have to trim every so often and oldest one has bangs. They both wear it layered so I have to do redo that every so often also. Im the only one who has to pay for a haircut which is usually only every 4-5 months depending on how fast it grows but, I do my own bangs. I have seen many parents mess up there kids hair and also have seen may do a great job.
