Bed Canopy

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive April 2004: Bed Canopy
By Mommyof4 on Wednesday, March 31, 2004 - 07:10 pm:

I bought a bed canopy for each of my daughers...these are the ones that are made out of a netting type material and hang from a round hoop. I was taking them out of the bags to hang up and saw a warning on the back of the pakcage that says they are flamable and to keep away from open flame and sources of ignition. My insticts tell me this is not a good thing to hand above my children's heads...what do you think? am I being paranoid?

Hmmmm, gosh I never thought about that! Well, I guess I would question if you are very careful with pajamas, pillows, sheets, stuffed animals, blankets. I would say to follow your instincts on this one. I imagine that it would be fine. If it's going to nag and nag at you, I would put it over a chair in their room instead. That's a bummer! Who would have thought?

But in reality isn't everything else flamable too? The sheets, pillows, comforters, etc?
I think it would be fine but if you will not be comfortable by all means put it somewhere else.

I agree. Most everything in the room is flamable. Are they burning candles in their rooms or something that would make it high risk? If not I would say there isn't any more risk than they normally are under. Go with your feelings on it. But personally I don't see it making any higher of a risk..

You know, I was totally paranoid for yrs about our home/children/fires... We had a group of people over in January and one of the husbands was a fireman. It dawned on me while he was here to ask him about all the things that I obsessively worry about. LOL Anyway, he said what it all boils down too is making sure your smoke alarms work!! He said that is what saves lives--the smoke alarms.

So if it were me I would hang them up and let the girls enjoy them. But make sure all your smoke alarms have new batteries outside their rooms. :) Oh and dont burn candles around them like someone else mentioned.

The worse thing is stuffed animals! Someone gave dds a huge polar bear (at least 4'). Oldest dd threw up on it and there was no way to clean it, so eventually I took it and put it in the burn barrel, POOF, a big ball of fire and it was gone it about 10 seconds, scary!

If you are worried, you can buy a spray that makes material flame retardent.

My dd wants one of these in the worst way...I love them, but I KNOW our kitty would love it even more! LOL
