Kidney or Dialysis Foundation
Does anyone know of a worthy kidney dialysis foundation? I've done some internet research and there seem to be many. A relative of a relative passed away of long-term kidney disease, and I'd like to make a donation in her memory. However, I'd like the money to go to someplace that really helps people. If you, or someone you know, has knowledge of a good foundation, or has been helped by one, please let me know the name of the foundation. Any suggestions would really be appreciated. Thanks, Ame
You could ask the hospital where your relative was treated, or your local hospital. Are you looking for a foundation or group that is primarily involved with/concerned with research? Or public awareness, education and advocacy about kidney disease? Or direct services to dialysis patients? You're in New York state, I see, but are you near NYC or some other major city? There are often programs based in large cities which focus on needy/"worthy" people in their area and provide direct service, which may be what you are looking for. But again, I would talk to either the social service office at a good sized hospital, or the hospital department that works with dialysis patients, or even a local urologist's office. The providers often have a pretty good notion of where to turn for help for their patients and have a better likelihood of knowing which organizations are better at providing services.
Wow, Ginny, Those are some good suggestions. I was kinda' hoping someone on this board would know of a good organization, so that I could avoid all the research you suggest. The deceased lived in Florida with her family, so something NY based would probably be less appropriate than a national foundation. As to the type of foundation, perhaps one that provides support for people suffering from kidney ailments or undergoing dialysis. Thanks, Ame
Ame, here is the National Kidney Foundation of Florida, which is part of the National Kidney Foundation program: http://www.kidneyfla.org/ Looks like they provide a variety of services, including transportation to and from dialysis and one-time grants to patients with needs. It appears to be the central organization in Florida for dialysis/kidney disease non-profit programs. If you decide to make a gift, you can specify which part of their program it goes to - patient services, research, etc.
