My Avocado Pit Won't Grow

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive March 2004: My Avocado Pit Won't Grow
By Joy~bundles on Saturday, March 20, 2004 - 09:53 am:

I had an avocado pit and decided it would be neat to show DS how you can grow them in a jar. DS was fascinated at the idea, so I poked the pit with three toothpicks and submerged most of the pit in water in a fat, glass jar that has plenty of space for the pit to grow.

It's now been two weeks and absolutely nothing has happened. Did I do this improperly or am I just being impatient? Or do I have a dud? Thanks for any advice!! :)

Here's a link to a horticultural extension program:
http://www.ext.nodak.edu/county/cass/horticulture/inform/indoor/avacado.htm

and another from the California Rare Fruit Growers Association:

And here is what may be the very best link:

Apparently it is important which end is up. Check yours and decide whether you need to start again.

when I grew and avocado it took awhile for it to grow anything. but it does make a beautiful plant. last summer dh put 4 in a pot of dirt and we forgot about them and months after all 4 of them were to big for the one pot.

I had a friend who had an avacado tree (I think avacado, but maybe fig) - I don't know if she started it from seed or bought it, but she lived in a building with 10 foot ceilings and this darned plant was all the way up to the ceiling and curving down.
