Community Service for Children
My friend and I were talking and we were trying to come up with some sort of communtiy project for our children to do. What I was thinking of doing with my boys is we have a park were we always play, it has one very neglected flower bed (maybe 4X4) I thought maybe we couldn go plant flowers at it in the spring. I was wanting to put a little place card in it, something to the extent of : this was done by some kids who really love this park, if you see weeds please take a moment and pull them out. I don't know kind of corny. Any suggestions? Also, can anyone think of anymore service type projects, I am always trying to come up with them for my own children and for my Sunday School Kids (10-12).
Plant flowers at a fire station, call bingo at a rest home, gather canned goods in the neighborhood for a women's shelter, collect gently used teddy bears for a children's hospital.
A nice idea is to put together "birthday" supplies for a food or women's shelter. Put together in a basket or box everything you would need to bake a birthday cake...cake mix, frosting, candles, even a disposable aluminum pan in case they don't have a pan. I haven't actually done this yet, but I got the idea for my Sunday School class.
Chrissy, I love your idea, I do not think it is kind of corny either. Animal shelters are always in need of extra help and donations. Donations of clothing to a womens shelter, donations of canned goods to the food bank.....Some nice ideas posted. I've always thought of starting a community garden? I'm not much of a leader though but I bet I would feel really good if I did start something.
I always say I am going to do something, you know, I make sure the kids learn all these other things and I think service to others is more important than any of it. I agree I would probably feel really good too if we did something. I went to church were we did a community garden, I was probably 6 and I just remeber how neat it was. Those are some great ideas, I really like the birthday party idea. I am the director of our church VBS and I always have a lot of left over party supplies too. This would be a great way to use them up instead of just tossing them into a box and letting them sit there.
Happynerdmom, my church did the birthday package for vacation bible school once. One day bring a cake mix, frosting candles. etc. Then took the packs across the street to the food pantry. That was fun to buy for. I don't think we had to buy an aluminum pan, but it must have been 4-5 things. In 5th grade, my dd14's teacher had them do a candy cane sale and then bought Christmas presents for poor folks. Dd11's Sunday School teacher had people collecting pennies in baby food jars. They ended up with a couple hundred dollars to spend on a home where young mothers can live with their children. Both of my kids got to go to Walmart to help with the shopping, too.
