Graded vs. multi-age kindergarten
I just found out last night that I need to make a choice between the two for my DD within the next two weeks. They offer both in our school district. I thought I was sure to go with graded and that is what my DH wanted for her, too-but I am questioning my decision now. With Multi-age she would have the same homeroom and team of teachers right through 2nd grade. But I'm not sure about mixing her in with older kids-she is very tiny for her age. Anyone have any input on either choice?
I don't think I would mix her in with kids that much older than she is. I know it's only 2 years, but there is still a big difference. I also don't like the idea because Kindergarten students need so much different type of attention than do the older grades that I don't think it would make for a good transition to the school environment. If it was me, I would do the graded.
DH and I talked last night and we have decided to stick with our decision and enroll her in a graded classroom.
I agree about keeping her in graded. There is suck a HUGE difference between the kids in K and the kids in 1st grade. I wouldn't have such an issue about mixing 1 and 2, but I think K needs to be by themselves! I think you will be very happy with your choice!!
I used to teach multiage Gr 1/2. I taught at a school with (these numbers are in years) 4/5 class, a 5/6 class, a 6/7 class, a 7/8 class and a 9's class. The parents and teachers chose each year where the students would go. For example, a 5 year old could be in the 4/5 class and skip to the 6/7 class the following year depending on his/ her development. It can be wonderful for some kids. I would choose it for your daughter if you feel she is ready for more of an academic kindergarten experience (ie being with older kids, reading, etc...) Sounds like she might not be though. It also is hugely beneficial to have a student for 2 years. You don't spend the fall "getting to know them."
