Geneology question!
I've read in several peoples profiles that they enjoy doing geneology. So, I have a question! My side of the family is traced WAAAYYYY back. My mom was a big geneology buff She did a great job putting together all kinds of neat things. My DH's side of the family is what I'm wanting to start on. His family is very different when it comes to family history. My DH's dad doesn't even know what his own grandfathers name was. It's really weird. So, we are basically starting from scratch. I have: DH's name DH's fathers name DH's grandfathers name DH's great-grandfathers name And, that's it! Is there a website that I can go to and search? Do I need to go to the geneology center? I suspect that not many of his families names have been entered in. I just need to be pointed in the right direction. I kind of feel bad for DH. There are no old family pictures, no stories that have been recorded. Nothing. I feel very lucky to have the geneology that I have for my side of the family. I have stories and experiences and pictures. Just tons of neat stuff to share with my DK's. I want to be able to have things from DH's side as well. Any tips would be great! TIA
Robin, My dh was the same way, particularly difficult because when he started most of them were past away. He went to a local geneologist, who only charged $6 an hour for research. She was in her 70's, not kidding. It was worth his while, she hit a lot of libraries, courthouse and cemeteries. He worked with her as far as she could go and then he contacted other living distant relatives to fill in the blanks. Good Luck, I don't have it done on my side, I should, but I'm like your dh, my one grandmother's mother died when she was 13. It will be very difficult
If no one else can help get you started let me know. My stepfather is retired and geneology is his life.
I like the website Family Search. I was able to go back 10+ generations on one side of the family! It won't work for everyone, because some of the data is contributed by families, but it also links to SS death index, 1880 U.S. Census data, etc.
You can easily do a search online. Ancestry.com Genealogy.com Rootsweb.com All have information on getting started. Good luck!
There are some good Mormon geneology sites as well (Church of the Latter Day Saints), since that particular denomination is very involved with geneology (everyone's!). I don't have them here at work, but if you do a search, you'll probably come up with some.
Thanks....I will check out those websites and see what I find! If all else fails, I'll e-mail you Fraggle! Janet....I am a Mormon....and I'm still lost when it comes to geneology! LOL
LOL That's funny!! (Open mouth, insert foot)
