Trying to locate a poem

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive February 2004: Trying to locate a poem
By Dana on Sunday, February 22, 2004 - 11:18 am:

It is about positive reinforcement.

No clue how to do a search that might list it.

In the first part it talks about (and this is just one phrase) a child coming home w/ a A on her report card. The parent offers praise and support. Then there are some other examples of this in that home.

The next section is the same examples of achievement, but the parent responds differently. The child comes home w/ a report card with A's. The parent responds something to the effect of "That's great, but did you mow the yard today?"

I wish I could remember more words, a title or author. Does anyone know the poem I am talking about?

TIA

I know the one you mean, but have no clue as to what it's called. I'll check in my documents, because I often save stuff like that.

I FOUND IT! :)

I really like it, and it has a lot to say about how we praise our child. I will post it here to share with you.

"I got two A's," the small boy said.
His voice was filled with glee.
His father rather bluntly asked,
"why didn't you get three?"
"Mom, I've got the dishes done."
The girl called from the door.
Her mother rather calmly said,
"And did you sweep the floor?"
"I mowed the grass," the tall boy said,
"And put the mower away."
His father asked him with a shrug,
"And did you clean off the clay?"
The children in the house next door
Seemed happy and content.
The same things happened over there,
But this is how it went:
"I got two A's" The small boy said,
His voice was filled with glee,
His father proudly said "That's great.
I'm glad you belong to me."
"Mom, I've got the dishes done,"
The girl called from the the door.
Her mother smiled and softly said,
"Each day I love you more."
"I mowed the grass," the tall boy said,
"And put the mower away."
His father answered with much joy,
"Thanks, son, that makes my day!"
Children deserve a little praise
For tasks they're asked to do.
If they're to lead a happy life,
A lot depends on you.

No title or author given on the copy I have.
