Scholastic Disney Book Club
I've gotten the flyer cards several times in the past few years advertising 8 books for $1.99 plus S&H with the catch that you have to purchase 4 shipments of 2 books each (books costing $4.99 a piece). Has anyone participated in this Book Club? If so, was it worth the money? Is it a better deal? Would you recommend it? And I would also like to know how difficult it was to return the shipments that you did not want. Thanks!
I have a lot of Disney books that I bought at a yard sale. It's really just like any other book club. I belong to two--Crossings and Children's Book of the Month Club. I do my replies online (saves me a stamp). I have forgotten a few times and just write "Return" on the box without even opening it. I've never had a problem with that. While the books themselves only cost $4.99 remember you're going to be paying $3-$6 each for shipping. Is there a used bookstore near you? We have one that not only sells used/good condition books but new books at a discount (they get returns from major stores). I can usually find most any book I want there for cheaper than through the book clubs. I've been a member long enough now that I get special offers quite often. Like buy one get one free (or 2 for a penny, or whatever). They also offer shipping discounts about every other month. I don't know anything specific about the Scholastic Disney club. Here's a link to CBOMC. Children's Book of the Month Club I only buy something about every 3-4 months. I just ordered a Mensa pack for my boys. It's a combo of two books and flashcards. I thought it'd be good in the car and for trips. Good luck with whatever (if any) you choose.
I don't really care for those types of clubs. We belonged to a video one once and it was more of a hassle for me than anything. Once your oldest starts school, he will probably get Book Orders every month. We have bought TONS of books this year from Megans book orders. They are very inexpensive. We got 8 books on one order for about $12.00. They are nice books and are offered at a very low price! If you decide to do the Disney book club, you'll have to post and let us know how it works out for you
I buy lots of children books on ebay. If each books are less that a buck I am usually pretty happy with the lots for the cheap prices. I get really bored reading the same books over and over again, so I like alot of books. I also read to ds for an hour a day to catch his language skills up.
Buy on ebay, man its a pain with that disney book club, it took me 3 years to get them to quit sending stuff!! When i sent a book back they just sent it again the next month!
I did the Dr. Suess book club when my oldest was a toddler. I think I bought close to 30 or so books before I canceled. This was back before the internet (1990), so I don't know how much cheaper it would be to buy online. But, I still have all of them and passed them down to his younger brothers!
There are really great used book web sites that I buy books from. Powells books, amazon.com, half.com , book emporium etc. The books are dirt cheap and even ship free sometimes or if you buy a certain quantity.I used to belong to a childrens book club and it was a hassle I thought.
We belonged to the Disney book club a few years back. Never again! While the initial books were at a great price, the rest were regular cover price. They also started sending me calendars, posters, music, videos which I had to send back by a certain date or get billed for. It became a real pain.
I did it for Timmy for 3 yrs and I love it her got tons of books and loves them now and I don't think I paid anymore for them including the shipping then what I would have for them at the store.
Thanks everyone, I think I'm not going to do the book club. I don't know why I didn't think of Ebay...I'm going to check there. I'll also check some garage sales and thrift stores around here. I love for the boys to have lots of books. A few moms on the board sent books for them after the fire, and they were thrilled!!!!!!! They miss having lots of books, so I am looking for a way to increase their book collection without paying an arm and a leg. Thanks so much guys!
Amy, those book clubs are usually a lot more hassle then they are worth. I got a lot of the kids books through the clearance rack at our local book store, yard sales, thrift stores and the books sales through school. You could also get a library card. Our library lets you check out 25 books and keep them for a month. All the kids have their own cards. So we can have upwards of 50 new books in the house every month. Then IF we get one they really like then I splurge and buy it for a birthday or holiday from the book store so they can have it to read over and over again. We got this idea with oldest DD because I was just buying books and we would read them and many of them never got read again. So once I started using the library to prescreen the books all the books we own are well written and a pleasure to read over and over again..
Cheapie books less than a buck a book. http://www.bookhutch.com/default.php?cPath=4_15_16&page=1&sort=7a
Thanks Bobbie for that suggestion, that's a great idea! I hate to keep poorly written, boring books on the shelf. Feona, thanks for that link. I'm going to check that out.
I also saw new books under children books in ebay
