My DS Tom who will graduate in June was accepted to Shippensburg University. We received the letter yesterday! He is so thrilled! It was the only college he applied to, because its the only one he wants to go to.
Now we just have to figure out all the financial info. The cost of college is crazy!! He may also be eligible for a soccer scholarship.
After all we have been thru in the last 6 weeks its nice to get some good news!
I am so proud of him. My first baby going away from home is a scary thought tho:(
Just thought I would share some happy thoughts for a change!

Congrats. My sister has her Bachelors in teaching from Ship. She loved it. I spent alot of time moving her in and out of dorm rooms while she was there. So get your muscles ready.

Yipppeee:)

(((Kath)))

Don't forget to fill out FASFA as soon or sooner, believe 2/1, you never know what's out there!

http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/

You can do this online, it is really easy, need any help, just ask!

Also contact college financial aid advisor about grants and scholarships:) Some grants can be looked into with the fasfa but most you have to dig to find, good luck!

I am so happy for you!

You should be, Shippensburg is a well known college, especially for degrees in education.

That is great news!! Yes the cost is crazy.
I hope he gets that scholarship!! Is a a scary to think of letting them go. My son just turned ten yesterday so I get to keep him for a while.

Also search online for scholarships. There's a crazy amount of scholorships that no one applies for. I know there's one for blond hair and blue eyes. And another one for left handed kids. There is all kinds like these that no one knows about.

By Melanie on Thursday, January 22, 2004 - 09:50 am:

Congratulations!! How exciting!!

By Eve on Thursday, January 22, 2004 - 10:25 am:

Congratulations, Tom!!

WTG Tom! Congratulations! Everyone who posted above regarding the FAFSA and scholarship search online is correct. And something you need to remember is you have to fill it out EVERY year for EACH child who is in college to maintain eligibility.

By Dana on Thursday, January 22, 2004 - 11:14 am:

WTG, Tom. Getting into college these days is not as easy as it was when I went. Meeting standards just to get there is an acheivement.

Kathy,
What a great oppurtunity for him. He has a great family and is very blessed to have a mom that is so proud!

Congratulations Tom!!! YOU MADE IT!

Thanks everyone. And thanks for all the good advice. Lots of work to do and lots of searching to do on the web. But its all worth it:)

One of my best friends from high school went to Shippensburg (it was Ship. State College then I am dating myself) and she loved it. A very beautiful part of PA. Congrats!!!

By Bobbie on Thursday, January 22, 2004 - 11:33 pm:

YEAH!!! great news. Does he know what he wants to study?

By Kernkate on Friday, January 23, 2004 - 09:08 am:

He is going to major in History. With hopes of becoming a high school history teacher. And his other goal is to become a high school soccer coach.

By Bobbie on Friday, January 23, 2004 - 11:26 pm:

My dd is a freshman this year and she has wanted to be a teacher for the past four years. This year she decided on her major. She wants to become a Spanish teacher. She has only taken Spanish this year but she is carrying the highest grade in 1st year Spanish. She is excelling in it. And she thought it was a good major because when she has children she can work part time through the courts, the hospital, Department of Human Services and even as a tutor.

I have great respect for people that have the courage to stand up in front of a bunch of unruly kids and share their knowledge. Takes a special person to devote their lives to something like that... Good luck to him...

By Dawnk777 on Saturday, January 24, 2004 - 07:24 am:

Congrats, Kathy!

By Kernkate on Saturday, January 24, 2004 - 09:56 am:

Bobbie, sounds like your DD is doing great! Good for her! Where does she attend school? I know myself I could never be a teacher, especially for high school, but DS Tom seems to really know what he wants. And I told him to go for it!

By Bea on Saturday, January 24, 2004 - 04:15 pm:

I have a niece who graduated from Shippensburg University. It used to be a PA State teacher's College. Great school.

Congratulations Tom
Good Teachers are a Treasure.

LOL No DD is a freshman in high school. LOL She is only 14. But she is the type to set her goals early and stick to them. She is figuring four years of Spanish in high school will be a big jump towards her goal. And she is planning on getting her Associates Degree here in Marion at our Ohio State branch and then she will go on to Ohio Wesleyan University in Delaware, Oh for her Bachelors. She has already researched it all and looked into both schools to make sure they offered what she is wanting and needing. She can start taking half day classes at Ohio State Marion her Senior year of High School. They have a program through the local high schools. To do this she has to have all of her required credits for graduation except for three which means full class loads for the the rest of this year and the next two. Her Spanish teacher and the other two teachers that teach Spanish at her high school have taken her under their wing and are doing everything they can to help her reach her goal and stick to it. She will be tutoring three other students starting next week for an hour before school and they have said something about having her tutor a couple of their spanish speaking students helping them to learn english. Her teacher (laughing) says it is in her blood. Dh's grandmother was Mexican, his grandfather was Cuban which makes his mom half and half. LOL. But no she isn't in College, yet...

By Kernkate on Monday, January 26, 2004 - 08:56 am:

LOL Bobbie I thought she was a freshman in college!! Tell her to stick to those goals. She seems like she has a very good head on her shoulders!
Bea, I have heard many people say its a great college if your going into teaching. I hope so!!
