Bronchiolitis
My youngest son (22 mo) has been SO sick for the past week. Started last wed- 103.6 temp and a slight cough. First diagnosed with pneumonia. At that point he was "bilateral." Went on antibiotics (zithromax). On Fri am his pulse-ox level was really low. Went on albuterol and flovent. Fri night- thrashing in bed after coughing. Didn't seem to be breathing well. HE wasn't. next am- pulse-ox very low. He was having apnea during the night. Given nebulizer at dr and it worked. Went home- got bad again towards evening, but then fever finally broke that night. Mon evening, stopped breathing while running around. Got him going again with ALbuterol. Very scary. Last night, WIRED beyond imagination. ALl of a sudden heart was RACING and pumping soooo hard. Rushed to er as per dr orders. He seemed ok. PRobably albuterol. Went back to dr this am. Still have to give albuterol- even though he has that reaction to it. He said he will still have the inflamation for about six weeks. YIKES. oh- and he was so wired, he didn't go to bed until 2AM last night- and no nap today and he's THROWING things everywhere nonstop. AHHHHHH!
Oh- forgot to mention on Sun night was screaming and thrashing in bed. Had an ear infection mon am. Dr didn't treat (because he was on Zithromax)until I called in the afternoon when another fever started......
you have all of my sympathy. My dd had terrible problems with bronchiolitis and rsv her first 3 years. thankfully, it looks like she has outgrown it (she's 6), but I remember spending many nights in a row, in a rocking chair w/her so she could be propped up enough to breathe. I also tried having her sleep in her carriage, with the back only semi-reclined, then I tried doing that and putting a vaporizer in front of her on a chair with a sheet draped over the whole thing to make a kind of mist tent. I hated the albuterol, she hated the taste, I hated the way it made her act. She ended up in the hospital in an oxygen tent, so make sure you keep your eye on him. If he keeps getting it, ask your dr for a Rx for your own nebulizer (if you have insurance), my dr told my insurance co if they didnt pay for it, he was going to instruct me to go to the ER everytime she started wheezing. We lived on takeout during the times she was sick too. It just made it easier on me. Good luck! Feel free to email me at colette@zdad.com if you want someone to commiserate w/what you are going through.
(((hugs))) Hope things are better soon. We too have been through RSV and bronchiolitis with my middle DD several times. She also has seemed to outgrow it. (she is 4 now)
Hope he's feeling better soon. (((Hugs)))
I'm going through bronchiolitis and RSV now with Seth. He just got over it a few weeks ago, and I suspect he may be starting again. I hope not. Ugh!
He's getting better. No he only has to do the Albuterol at night and the Flovent just to make sure he doesn't relapse. The dr told me it will be inflammed for 6 weeks. YIKES. About the nebulizer, we did ask for one last weekend, but apparently drs rarely prescribe them anymore (they prescribe the chamber- which is what we have). Our dr called three pharmacies and they didn't carry them. He's much better with the chamber now and apparently, it's the same medicine and just as effective as a nebulizer. Hope Seth is ok, Amy!
I pray all these little ones are healing and their Moms can get some rest.
Laura, glad to hear he's doing better! My DS has asthma, and we have both the chamber and a nebulizer. The chamber is for the yellow zone (mild asthma symptoms) and if his symptoms persist or become worse I use the nebulizer. The chamber is not effective if the child isn't able to inhale it properly, as often is the case when asthma symptoms become more serious. The nebulizer gets the medicine in quicker and more effectively with little effort by the patient. All he/she has to do is breath in the mist. Since getting our nebulizer and using it per instructions of DS's asthma action plan, we've been able to avoid ER and Dr. visits. Amy, I hope Seth is doing OK!
Forgot to mention, albuterol definitely makes kids hyper! UG!
My ds is on Albuterol right now and has been for a couple weeks now, so I can also say that it does make kids hyper!!!
He is doing okay thanks, he is still having mild weezing, and I am giving him 4 puffs of albuterol through the chamber. We are going back to the doctor tomorrow to check on his progress.
