Has anyone have any home renovations on the go?

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive February 2004: Has anyone have any home renovations on the go?
By Mrse on Sunday, January 18, 2004 - 06:45 pm:

Is anyone involved in painting thier house, or into some kind of renovation in their house? I am trying to figure out how to place cabinets in my kitchen, first off I have an older house, and one side of the kitchen has cupboards, and the other side of the room, has the fridge, stove dishwasher and the sink in a small amount of cabinets, so I have to have all the appliances on one wall, but the problem is, is that their is a beam, in the middle of the wall, where the add on is. Oh, and to make matters worse right now, my window is not center to my kitchen sink, it is off to the lelf, then the cupboards underneath the sink, are off center two, and nothing is lined up , the window the sink, or the cabinets underneath, so this is driving me just nuts. Not sure if it would be cheaper to move the window over to the sink, or move the sink under the window , and have to buy all new counters plus plumbing. If anyone knows a site on how to make cupboards, I sure would appreciate it. My other cabinets are plywood, with mahogany facings and doors, stained and varnished, so I am going to try to match the other side, the doors and facings of the cupboards on the yucky side are painted, but it is mahogany, so I will have alot of work to do, to try to get it all off. If anyone has a project, or knows of a site on how to do basic cabinets, please let me know, thanks

Well we had made our own cabinets in my kitchen. I live in a trailer so we gutted it all out but what I did was take a measurement of the room and took it to Lowes and got measurements on cabinets and how to set it up then we took it from there and me and my Hubby made them in the garage and to tell you the truth it was cheaper doing it ourself then to hire someone to do the work when we were all done it cost a little over 7000.00 but it was with new sink and appliances to go along. Good Luck it is worth all the times it takes to get it done at least you know what kind of work and enjoyment is really in it.

Is thier any way you can post a picture by any chance? I have been drawing out kitchen plans for forever, just want to settle with a plan and get it over with, so I can move onto the next renovation. Thanks for your response, a picture of your kitchen would be appreciated if you can, thanks,

Did you look at the cabinets at home depot?

They had some you assemble and some assembled already.

a lot of times the place that you are buying the cabinets from will come out and help you design your kitchen for free. They can be quite helpful.

Draw a floor plan of your current kitchen with exact measurements and take it to Home Depot or Lowes or Chase Pitkin, whatever giant hardware/do it yourself stores you have. They will design a floor plan with a computer and give you a printout of your new plans and show you which size cupboards they are talking about, etc. It's helpful if you show your windows, outlets, where your current appliances are, and that beam. Good luck!

We are getting ready to redo our kitchen along with painting all of our rooms and putting hardwood floors in our living room. My dh and I want a old dinner theme with coke a cola. We are going to rebuild our cabnets ourselfs. were just going to use the old cabnets measurements to make the new ones. but I did find the other day a home store that sold seconds and I found cabnets that are from lowes nothing wrong with them and they were 30.00 and at lowes there were 120.00. so we,ve been getting some stuff from there. My daughters room is going to a be a rain forest. my mom is coming to paint her merial (sp) in her room my other daughters wants butterflys all over her walls and son we are going to paint a New York scene at night and have spiderman and hulk along with all the other super hero's in the city. I think its going to be cool.

Hi, Mom of four, sorry I forgot to check my post, so how is the kitchen reno going? It sounds like you have a lot of work ahead of you, doing your kitchen, plus the kids rooms, you have some really neat Idea's. Can you post some pictures when you are done? I did not even think that a hardware store had second's, great idea!! we do not have a lowes here in our town, but I am going to check out the other stores that we do have. Thanks for replying sorry it took so long for me to clue in, sometimes theses posts go to the bottom really fast.
