Not a baby any more

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive December 2007: Not a baby any more
By Marie on Thursday, December 20, 2007 - 06:32 pm:

My oldest dd started her period and all I could do was cry. They grow up way to fast. We had stopped at Walmart and she didn't want to go in and I said well is there anything you need. She looks at me and says Mom I started my period at school and I need some pads and she begins to cry. I hug and tell her its alright and everythings okay. I had a long list to get in walmart got to the doors and my mind went blank and when I got to the pads I had no clue witch ones to get for her. So I got a box and a dozen roses for her and we came home. I call dh and all he could say was no not yet he came home with a huge teddy bear for her. I figured she wold start around 13 like I did so she is almost 13 so I made sure she had a couple pads with her just in case she started at school and sure enough she started at school. But I really wasn't ready and now when I look at her she looks like she is 10 years older

I feel for you. I only have one child and she turned 13 last week. I can't believe how fast she is growing up. She hasn't started her period yet, but I expect her to within the next 6 months or so. I can almost see it coming. She is getting so moody!!

I feel your pain. My daughter started at 11.
It was very heart breaking.
The roses were a nice touch!
I took my daughter out to "celebrate".

Crazy, isn't it? My dd is 17 and a senior in high school. Wait until it's time for her first gynecology appointment and you start talking about the pill, LOL. It's all so bittersweet as they are growing up. (((Hugs))) to you and your dd! You sound like a great mom. :)

I think it's so sweet that you bought her roses and that your husband brought home a teddy bear. You sound like wonderful, caring parents.
((Hugs)) Just thinking about this makes me feel emotional, and my dd is still very young.

Nicki - that's the way I feel. I can't imagine how sad I will feel when this day comes for us.

Marie - {{HUGS}} The roses were a wonderful touch. You sound like terrific parents!

I started at 10 or 11. My parents were wonderful about it. My parents took me out to dinner to celebrate, and my dad actually took me to the store to get feminine products because my mom had broken her ankle very badly only a week or so before. He was perfect about it and helped me pick out what I needed! :)

Oldest DD started at 12, one of my twins started at 10 and the other twin has yet to start (they will be 11 in March). I started at 10 myself.

Big hugs to you and your DD. Be proud of your DH, he did good..

I have to say I started and for my house it was no big deal. My sister was older so she had stuff already and I think it was the 2nd month before my mom realized I was even having periods. I was a tomboy so I didn't bring it up.

My dad looked as if life was over since I was the baby girl and his sidekick.

I am thinking of Jade and I know it will be harder on Rich that me. She is daddy's little girl. But I have to day he will get pads or whatever for me from the store not an issue at all so would my dad.

I have great men in my life and Timmy is going to grow up knowing about those things and not being grossed out about them.

Congrats to your DD on her leap into womanhood.

By Dawnk777 on Thursday, December 20, 2007 - 11:45 pm:

I started at 13. Sarah started at 11. Emily started at 12.

I was going to wait to announce the event, after we all ate supper. My best friend called during dinner, to see if I'd said anything yet, and I had to tell why she had called. I'm really not a good liar! LOL! So, I got to announce it at the dinner table! Not what I had in mind. I don't remember the exact day anymore, but I do know it was May 1973. I would have been 13, about 2 months prior to that, in March.

I was 11 I think. It wasn't a big deal at our house at all. I have a son so I don't have to deal with that growing up aspect but I'm sure I'll have my own "OMG moment" at some point.

Congrats to your daughter!

I think I will be crying when my girls start too! I was so embarrassed by all that stuff, there is no way I could have gone to the store with my dad. I was about 11. My parents knew that stuff embarrassed me but teased me about it constantly saying it happens to everyone. I know I won't do that. I swear if I didn't know better I'd think my 7 yr old gets pms now she is so moody sometimes and the dramatic things she says! How nice for your daughter to have a mom like you!

I had a hysterectomy a year ago (July) and I tend to not get into the drawer they are stored in anymore. Emily started and discovered they were out. Callie was at work, DH and I were gone. She went to Dill. He had a friend over, he asked for a ride and went to the store and picked up a package. Even at 15 it is not a big deal to him, they have to be bought. My kids are comfortable talking about things like that because we just always have, it is just a part of life around here.

DH has picked them up for me since we were dating. He didn't grow up with any girls BUT he doesn't care much about what people think so he had no issue with walking around with a bag of pads in his hand. He also has attended every OB GYN appointment I have had for the past 20 years, that is not a big deal to him either.

My dad would buy pads too, he also would run me to the store for makeup products.. He was better at helping with that stuff than my mother was, honestly.

I shouldn't have read this thread. My baby dd is 6. I can't stand this.

My oldest is 10 and I know I'll have a harder time adjusting to this milestone than she will.
