Powder vs. Liquid

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive January 2004: Powder vs. Liquid
By Tonya on Wednesday, January 7, 2004 - 12:57 pm:

I used all liquid mix for formula with Timmy because I heard the powder was too hard and always very clumpy and hard to disolve.

Well now I have seen powder and wonder which one you ladies used or do use now. Or do you use both depending on the situation?

By Momoffour on Wednesday, January 7, 2004 - 01:45 pm:

I prefer liquid it rinses out alot easier. I used powder for awhile but keep getting clumps in the jeans.

Tonya, I always used powder formula, unless I had a coupon. I always mixed it in the blender. Usually I mixed enough for a whole day or two, depending upon the babies age. I never had any trouble with it disolving. That was over 2 years ago, youngest dd didn't stay on formula for long.

Hey how are you doing? Still thinking about you:)

Momoffour - are you talking about baby formula or laundry detergent? LOL

For formula, I'd use powder and either start the mixing with a reasonable amount of water in a blender or use one of those hand-held blenders bartenders use. I think the powder is a lot less expensive.

For laundry detergent I always use liquid. My mom used powder because of cost, dumped the powder in a load of my semi-delicate dark items, bunch of powder on part of skirt of mostly poly dress, water hit the powder and I wound up with some of the color bleached out. I really liked that dress, darn it. I use liquid and always put the detergent in and wait until the washer is at least a third full before putting in the clothes. If I am also using bleach, I wait until it is at least 2/3 full before putting in the clothes. Once burned, twice shy.

I breastfed and used powder with my first 2, but with my last one I only bought the premixed ready to feed formula because it was much easier.

I used both. Premixed was more expensive than powder but required no mixing or sterilizing.. Powder is convenient when out and about. I used these and they were great when traveling.

I used powder mostly because of the cost. The premix and concentrate were just waaaaaay to expensive.

I always used powder formula. I never even tried the liquid. I never really thought much about it. I just filled the bottles with water before I left the house and I had a container to carry the formula powder. It was very easy to just pour the powder in and shake it up. Plus, now they all make the individual(For 4 oz.) servings that are in little wrappers and easy to carry. :)

I used liquid formual for both of my girls, I tried the powder and never liked it. I was lucky because I had a family memeber who worked at the hospital and I got the 4 oz and 8 oz premixed bottles. All the people I have ever babyset for use powder and I think it has improved over the years.

I am going to get WIC so honestly the cost is not an issue. I was thinking of doing the liquid it was just so easy and I always make enough bottles for 2-3 days. And just keep the powder on hand for the outtings. I have a container that you can put 4 seperate servings into and just take the water filled bottle with you.

By Missy3 on Wednesday, January 7, 2004 - 02:33 pm:

I use liquid when the babies first came home, one less thing to do and more time to sleep, hey 4 minutes is 4 minutes.

Now I use the powder and use the shake n store pitcher I got from my shower. If you use powder and use warm water, it helps it dissolve faster, I have had no clumps.

As for outings they have these cute little formula 8 oz to go containers, just pour and serve. Very expensive, but when you are in a hurry!! Or you know many restaurants or even bathrooms do not have hot running water. If these little containers are not a life saver for that! Room Temp is fine. Outdoor trips to the zoo or parks, etc they come in handy.

p.s. I hope you are not talking about detergent!!!ROFL

Neither of mine ever used formula, but I remember being ambitious when Robin was about 6mo and using one of the little cans of liquid formula the hospital gave me to make him pudding. I thought he'd like it. NOT!!! It smelled awful and he spit it out! lol I was too funny. I have used powered formula for daycare kiddos, though. I never have problems with it clumping now, but years ago (back in 1992) when I was a nanny it was a bit of a problem. Not terrible, but you had to mix/shake VERY well. I think the manufacturer's have improved it now and it's not really an issue anymore.

I was on WIC with kiddo number 1 and i think it was both then and then with Alex i used the powder i love it because we were always on the go and it's easy to mix = )

By Mommyathome on Wednesday, January 7, 2004 - 05:43 pm:

We used both, but mostly powdered. If you buy a good quality formula, it should mix very well. We had some friends that bought store brand, and it didn't mix nearly as well leaving clumps and so on.
Enfamil makes little to-go type packets that are great for the diaper bag.
We used premixed for night-time feedings sometimes. I didn't really find it any easier to use. It seemed a lot thicker to me, and the kids would spit up more when they drank pre-mixed.

I'm so excited for you....you are getting close. I was just telling DH last night that I REALLY wanted another (our last :( ) baby NOW....but I told him not to let me talk him into it quite yet. (My *baby* will be 2 on Friday)

Cant wait to hear the big news!

By Bellajoe on Wednesday, January 7, 2004 - 05:51 pm:

I used the powder formula. Similac to be exact and it wasn't clumpy at all. I did try Carnation formula but it really was stinky...especially when they spit up.

By Dawnk777 on Wednesday, January 7, 2004 - 06:14 pm:

I used powder because it was much cheaper than the liquid forms of formula. I never had trouble mixing it. My kids never had trouble drinking it either and it was also easier to take out on trips.
