Update on my Dog
She is out of surgery and everything went well. They xrayed her hips and right knee and the hips look good and no obvious problems with the right knee for now. I'm so happy and relieved, our house just feels so empty with out our big 'ol dog, I can't wait to get her home. Thanks again to everyone who was so supportive.
Great news!!!!!!!!
Glad everything went well......the recovery period is long, but all worth it in the end
I'm glad everything ok. When will she be back home?
Yes when will you be getting her back.. Prayers for a quick healing.
I'm so happy for your fuzzy friend and for you. I know you'll be giving her the good care she needs while she recovers. Scott gives a warning that if you feed her at the same level while she is convalescing, she will gain wait - try cutting back on her food until she starts being active again. Gaining weight wouldn't be good for her newly repaired joints.
She'll be home tonight, DH will pick her up after work. Ginny, thank Scott for me that is a very good point I hadn't thought of. She is already on a reduced calorie diet as she was a bit overweight and I could not exercise her prior to her surgery. I'll ask the vet if I should change her food and how much we should cut back. Right now I feed her 3 cups of dry kibble each morning. I can't wait to see my big fur face!
Chai, Scott had to put Sascha on a diet when the vet said, quite correctly, that even for a larger than average Rottie, 125# was too much, especially with her bad hips and after two ACL surgeries. Scott gets a prescription diet kibble from the vet. I don't quite understand it, but he says that a large portion of the kibble is non-digestible fiber that just goes through her digestive system (in a normal way) without adding calories, and the rest of it provides the protein, vitamins, etc. that she needs. Over a 6 month period she went from 125# to 95#, where she is hovering now. We can certainly see the difference, both in her middle and in greater ease of movement. He feeds her a bit less than two cups of kibble with a couple of tablespoons of wet food for flavor, twice a day, and she seems perfectly satisfied after she inhales her meals. I'll have to ask him the name of it tonight, because I don't remember what it is and the bag is gone. I know that it costs $35 for about a 20# bag, and that lasts about 5-6 weeks.
Chai, what Sascha gets is Purina Canine OM (Obesity Management). Scott says it is important to talk to the vet because just cutting back on the regular diet could also cut back on nutrients the dog needs, where the special diet is balanced so that all the nutrients are there along with the "filler".
Thanks Ginny, we will have to take her in to see the vet in a week for her post op check-up so I'll ask about that food. Thank you, thank you. She'll be home soon!!!!
That is great news...Congratulations and I hope she heals fast.
