By My2girlygirls on Wednesday, December 31, 2003 - 09:31 am:

ALWAYS! We use our seatbelts every time we get in the car.

By Kernkate on Wednesday, December 31, 2003 - 09:34 am:

All the time! Kids are in proper carseats. Wouldn't have it any other way.

By Mommyathome on Wednesday, December 31, 2003 - 10:20 am:

Yes, we are all properly restrained :)

By Bellajoe on Wednesday, December 31, 2003 - 10:39 am:

Absolutely. To tell you the truth i feel kinda 'naked' if i don't put on my seat belt right away.
And of course the kids are always in thier car seats buckled up too.

By Dawnk777 on Wednesday, December 31, 2003 - 10:39 am:

ALL the time! My husband, kids and I ALWAYS wear seat belts, always used car seats when we needed to, and always wear bike helmets.

By Eve on Wednesday, December 31, 2003 - 10:41 am:

Yes, all the time. The only time I don't is when I am riding in someone else's car and there is only a lap belt available. I choose to use nothing in that case. All other times, I feel naked without it. I know my Mother does not always wear hers. Her generation didn't, but mine buckles up for safety. :)

By Marg on Wednesday, December 31, 2003 - 10:53 am:

I know what you mean about mom's not growing up in that generation. However, my mom and dad lived at the bottom of a hill and when I was about 6, one Sunday evening we saw a terrible accident (head-on collision (sp?). One car going up the hill and a truck coming down the hill. There were kids on the back of the truck (remember that era?) and we saw a kid fly through the air what seemed like forever and landed in a field nearby. I can still see that so clearly in my mind. We were never allowed to ride in the back of a truck again and after that we always used seatbelts. Heaven knows why me, mom and dad were standing at the picture window that Sunday evening, it was a terrible thing to watch:(

By Dawnk777 on Wednesday, December 31, 2003 - 01:03 pm:

My parents wear seatbelts, too. At the point that seatbelts were available in cars in the 60's, we were all expected to wear seatbelts. It's my grandma that I just fasten it for her because she never would do it on her own.

By Karen~moderator on Wednesday, December 31, 2003 - 02:21 pm:

Always!

By Cat on Wednesday, December 31, 2003 - 03:20 pm:

Absolutely! Kids in proper car/booster seat, also. I irritate some of my friends when they ride with me because my car doesn't move unless everyone's buckled in. *g* Here's a little quote I like, don't know who said it.

Hug your kids at home. Belt them in the car. :)

By Debbie on Wednesday, December 31, 2003 - 03:30 pm:

Yes, always. My dks are always properly restrained, my 3 yr. old in a carseat and my 5-1/2 year old in a booster. We just moved to Illinois this month. I heard on the news that they are changing the carseat law here effective the 1st. Now, dks from ages 4 to 7 must be in booster seats. I am so glad they changed it. I know in Texas, where it is only to age 4, most kids in my ds's kindergarten were not riding in boosters.

By Mommyathome on Wednesday, December 31, 2003 - 03:45 pm:

The law here (Utah) is something like 85 pounds and under must be in proper booster/car seats. But of course I still see parents dropping off their kindergarteners with NO seatbelt at all, let alone a carseat!

By Ginny~moderator on Wednesday, December 31, 2003 - 05:15 pm:

I work in a plaintiffs' personal injury law firm. That means we represent people who were injured, often in motor vehicle accidents. I can always tell, by looking at the medical records, which client was wearing a seat belt and who wasn't. Those without seat belts always, ALWAYS, have worse injuries.

I remember a case several years ago - two college boys driving home for a holiday. One boy was driving, seat belted. The other was sleeping, not belted. The driver fell asleep at the wheel, the car went off the road and turned over three times. The belted driver suffered concussion, a broken arm, and various cuts and bruises. The unbelted passenger was thrown from the car and suffered permanent brain damage.

I always use my seat belt. I remember a few months ago for unknown reasons I didn't fasten my belt - and about 3 blocks from the house figured out why I felt so strange - and immediately buckled up. I even buckle up when switching cars in and out of the driveway - never know when some idiot may come barrelling down the street.

By Trisa on Wednesday, December 31, 2003 - 07:05 pm:

Yes always!!

By Dana on Wednesday, December 31, 2003 - 07:56 pm:

Always here too. And no children allowed in my car without proper carseat or booster. And in the event I do have a guest w/ child, the rules are "we can go only if the seat fits in my car properly. If it doesn't I'll have to cancel our plans."

Drives me nuts to see kids unbelted in a car, esp when they should be in some sort of car seat.

And riding in the back of the truck! OMG, I say a prayer each time I see that happening. What are those people thinking?

By Trina~moderator on Wednesday, December 31, 2003 - 10:05 pm:

Good! Glad to hear so many people always wear their seat belts! :)

Eve, yes, lap belt only positions are dangerous, but still safer than no seat belt at all. More info at cpsafety.com.

One of my biggest pet peeves is when parents don't properly restrain their children in vehicles. Many people *think* they are doing it correctly but in fact aren't. Simply following the child restraint laws in your state isn't enough. I've had several people ask why my 5.5 yr. old DD is still in a 5 pt. harnessed car seat. Well, she's only 36 lbs., and kids are safest in a harnessed seat until at least 4 yrs. AND 40 lbs.. Not to mention the fact she's a busy child and I know she can't be trusted to sit properly in a belt positioning booster. My DS (7.5) is probably the only 2nd grader in our area still in a booster seat. He will continue to ride in a booster for a long time, at least until he passes the 5 Step Test

Dana, I have the same rules in my van. :) I always have extra boosters and a Britax Laptop with me in case I have extra kids to transport.

I'm a Child Passenger Safety Advocate and hope to become a certified CPS tech this spring. I have TONS of resources if anyone is interested. Here are a few for starters. :)

Always

Bummer. :( The News Story isn't there any longer. I'll see if I can find it in the archives.

By Bea on Thursday, January 1, 2004 - 03:00 am:

When our oldest was in Driver's Education in high school, we attended a Parents - Teachers night. His driving instructor asked how many of the parents wore seat belts every time they were in their cars. About half the parents raised their hands. Then he asked how many of us wanted our kids to buckle up every time, and every hand was in the air. He reminded us then, that kids follow what they see us do.... not hear us say. From that day forward, I've never started our car without everyone inside bucked up.

By Hol on Thursday, January 1, 2004 - 04:17 am:

Absolutely!!! The kids, also. When they were in CPS Care (before they came to me), they had them VERY well trained to buckle up before the car moved.

I don't know if I can say the same for DH. I KNOW he doesn't always do it when I'm not with him. In fact, sometimes, as we get ready to drive on board the base, he'll quickly buckle his seat belt. The gate guards will refuse entry if you are not buckled up, not to mention that it is STATE law!

By Pamt on Thursday, January 1, 2004 - 12:22 pm:

Absoposilutely!!! I've been wearing mine since I was a young teenager and even got my parents into the habit of wearing theirs. The car doesn't move unless everyone is PROPERLY buckled in. I worked in a rehab unit for several years and saw far too many patients who had to re-learn how to talk, eat, walk, dress themselves, establish bowel/bladder control, etc. after severe head injuries caused from being unbuckled in a car accident...IF they even survived. It's also the same reason why no one in my house will own a motorcycle (where helmets do little to protect because of high speeds) and why helmets must be worn for all bike and skateboarding activities.

By Kim on Thursday, January 1, 2004 - 12:38 pm:

the car does not rolll until all belts are strapped. when other kids come over and say their parents do not make them strap I inform them that the car does not roll until all belts are strapped. it is automatic for my children. they do not even have to think about it anymore, they just do it first thing.

By Kate on Thursday, January 1, 2004 - 12:46 pm:

Trina, knowing you, I can assume your extra boosters are belted in as well? :) That's what I HATE about minivans!!! There is no SAFE place to story anything! In a crash or rollover the loose items will go flying and could kill people. An unrestrained booster would be quite the weapon! Not to mention the unrestrained stroller many people cart around. I solved my stroller problem by taking the middle seat belt (lap belt) from my third seat and pulling it back through to the back. I buckle it around one sturdy section of my stroller and then tighten it up. Now in an accident the stroller will stay in the back of the van where it belongs!

By Trina~moderator on Thursday, January 1, 2004 - 06:03 pm:

LOL, Kate! You assumed correctly. :)

Speaking of projectiles, I saw a sedan recently with a hammer sitting on the dash board. YIKES! A serious hazard in the event of a crash!
