I Need Frozen Chicken Advice
This is a long standing problem for me. If you don't want the background, just skip to the last paragraph. I'm not a great cook. I'm not a good cook. I'm not even a lousy cook. In The Great Cooking Race, I am a non-starter. Here's what happens. I buy some form of chicken - let's say chickenbreasts. I resolve that THIS time I am really going to cook them. They sit in my fridge a few days. Their sell date approaches like a storm on the horizon. At this point, one of two things happens: I get distracted and forget about them until they have to be tossed; or I maintain my focus and throw them in the freezer in the basement while vowing that some day I'll learn how to deal with frozen chicken. This morning, (while looking for frozen waffles - there weren't any because I'm also not so good at grocery shopping) I noticed all that chicken and bravely took a package out. I found the crock pot (on the basement shelf with the personal flotation devices and my kids' baby clothes from 1991) and washed it. My question: In a spirit of experimentation, I've put the frozen chickenbreasts in the crockpot, but as I did so, I noticed that the sell date was July 2005. No matter how many times I do the math, this comes out as more than two years ago. I'm going to go ahead and see what happens when you put frozen chicken in a crockpot. The question is: Do you think it's still okay to eat?
Do you think it's still okay to eat? I don't think so. At least *I* wouldn't be willing to give it a try.
No, I would toss this chicken in a heart beat.:-) Good for you for making the effort to pull out the crock pot! I'm like you, Mlee. I'm so not a cook. But, I like crock pot recipes. I would want to start with all fresh myself.
Mlee, are you my long lost twin?!?! I canNOT cook, NOR grocery shop without many horrible things going wrong, and without having to concentrate WAY harder than any other human doing such mundane tasks.... It is simply NOT my gift. It is not 'in' me, it does not come the slightest bit naturally to me, it always surprises me that we have no food, or that dinner time has come and the table is empty... One day I tried REALLY hard and I made a meatloaf in the EARLY afternoon, stuck it uncooked in the fridge, and went about my day smug with the knowledge that come that evening we would actually eat. We went off to a playdate, and I dutifully watched the clock and left on time to put my meatloaf in the oven (all the while 'casually' explaining that we had to leave now, as I had to get my dinner in the oven....smug again....' So we got home and I dutifully preheated the oven. I was SO impressed with myself!!! Then I waited for my husband to come home an hour later and daydreamed about his stunned reaction to DINNER!! On the table!!! At dinnertime!! Made by me!!! Well, he came home and I proudly opened the oven door with a flourish. Toasty warm air poured out of the oven, but alas, that was all that was inside. I NEVER PUT THE MEATLOAF *IN* THE OVEN!!! I MADE it, I REMEMBERED to come home and COOK it, I PREHEATED the oven....and there it stopped. There my brain stopped working. Really it's a wonder I got as far as I did that day. I baked air for one whole hour. (of course, there have been plenty of times I've washed a whole load of NOTHING in the washing machine, too, while the neatly sorted pile of clothes lay at the foot of the machine....apparently I have problems with the COMPLETION of a task...) Grocery shopping....a tale (or two) for another day... Anyhow, I wouldn't DARE advise you on your chicken. That would be downright dangerous.
I believe that you should not eat meat that has been frozen longer thansix months, but a quick web search may give you a better estimate. Kudos to you for trying, though! Ame
I would toss it. Two years is too long and chicken is too risky!
OMG... I am the exact same way.. I take frozen chicken breasts out to defrost in the fridge. I always have "good intentions" on cooking them...but then other things come up and I forget about it, or say "We will cook them tomorrow"...and tomorrow never happens then we toss them.. I know such a waste. I am not a good cook. I am not a bad cook, I just dont like to cook LOL...When I cook things they do come out ok,never burn things, and nobody gets sick LOL.. I just dont have the desire to cook...
PLEASE do not eat that chicken I do not freeze my meat. I do have an easy recipe/method of cooking chicken breasts. I marinade them in Newman's Own Balsalmic Vinegar. I usually grill them but you can cook them in the oven just as easily. Very simple and very tasty!
My semi-DD says you guys are "Boring! No risk takers in this group at all!" Thank you thank you Kate and Jackie!! My long lost sisters! Thank you everybody! We won't eat this old meat.
Well....Once you have had food poisoning, you tend not to take risks!
LOL... I have had food poisoning in the past also. So bad in fact, dh, dd and myself all ended up in the ER on vacation! It is not fun at all. When in doubt, toss it. Although, we didn't get it at home, but at a restaurant while on vacation.
My Dh had food poisoning just last year. He ate some left overs his mom sent home with us from a family get together. It had been out on the serving table a bit too long. In the twenty some years we've been together, I've never, ever, seen him so sick. It was truly awful, and he also ended up in ER. Definitely not a risk taker here! When in doubt, toss it out.:-)
I have food poisoning twice. The first time, I ended up in the hospital. It is horrible! I do not take any chances with food now. If in question, I do not eat it!
