IPod vs MP3

IPod vs MP3
Our dd wants an IPod for Christmas. We got her a 2GB Sony MP3 player instead b/c she is only 11 and we were worried she might break or lose the IPod. The Sony was cheaper. Is she going to be extremely disappointed? Should I return it and get the IPod?
My daughter has had the IPod for over a year. She has had no problem taking care of it. If it is her main gift I would give her the IPod. It is your decision. Has she shown that she can take care of her things?
Dillan wants to know what MP3 player you got? MP3 players can be as detailed as an IPod. Some however aren't and that would make the difference on whether she would be okay with it or not, I am sure. Does it have a display screen, for example, where it tells you what songs are playing? The IPod Shuffle, sells for under 80 dollars and is similar to most MP3 players, doesn't have one. However, there are MP3's that do have a screen similar to the IPod Nano, they are also similar in size. There are also MP3 players that you can up load pictures to, which would also be similar to an IPod Nano. Both the IPod and the MP3 uses the same music formats, so she shouldn't have an issue finding music and both can have a program that converts CD's to a format that they both can read.
You are paying more for the IPod/Apple logo, per Dillan, by the way.. They both play MP3's. He wants me to ask if you know why she is asking for one?? Do all of her friends have one and she is wanting one too? Or is she just wanting it for her own personal reasons, likes music and such?
Actually that's all the boys are getting for christmas we might throw in $100 each but i'm still not sure anyways yes they are basically the same thing but i know when i had my ipod it was easier to load music on than my sister in laws mp3 player much much much easier lol = )
I bought my son at age 11 an Ipod, he lost it. In hindsight I wish I would of just bought him an MP3 player.
I bought my 14 year old a Sansa instead of an IPOD. I have a Sansa. When I bought mine, and again when I bought hers, the sales guy told me the Sansa was a better item for my money. Mine is just for music, and hers is comparable to the Nano. She really wanted a Nano, but it was at least $50 more, and the accessories were that much more, too. I couldn't justify paying for a name.
I used to be in the "get a regular MP3" camp, but having owned a couple of each, I heart my iPod. I'm actually on my second, an iPod Touch. Honestly, I can't explain my I love it so much more, but I have adored both my Nano and my Touch since I first picked them up. (I'm listening to my Touch now, ) The ONE thing I dislike about iTunes is that QuickTime is bundled in it, and no matter how many times you remove it, it gets added back on with the updates. It's still very user-friendly. Anyway, the iPod is awesomely sturdy, at least the Nano is. I have carried that thing in my purse, taken it to the gym, used it in the car, pretty much live with it, and it's still just perfect. Obviously, I wouldn't recommend such treatment for the Touch, because of the screen, but if you have a Shuffle or Nano you can beat the crap out of it, and never know the difference. Do you think your DD is capable of not losing it? If so, the iPod is worth it, IMHO.
Bobbie, tell Dillon it is a Sony and that yes, it does have a screen that you can download videos to. It cost $90 as opposed to the $150 for an IPod Nano. The Shuffle is just too small. She has asked for a IPod b/c I think some of her friends have one. Her brother has a cheap MP3 and she thinks it doesn't play enough songs.
I think yes she will be dissappointed. I would certainly talk to her about it. Just say okay well we were looking and we wanted clarification on what you want. Just say there are lots of ipods and mp3 players and you weren't sure which features she liked best. Then she will let you know. LIke crystal I heart my ipod. I don't use it much, but it brings me great joy I love the video feature on the new nano, I thought how silly, but things like I was in the hospital I could watch a movie, on the airplane I could watch a movie...very cool. All my kids have ipods, an old shuffle for the 9 year old, but my oldest two 12 and 13 have had nanos, the old style, for over a year.
Another point to look at is that a lot of people call mp3 players Ipods. They group them under the same heading. So maybe it isn't that she necessarily has to have the Ipod, but that is what she calls regular mp3s, also. Maybe she just wants an mp3. Both of my children have an mp3 and they have been very easy to load songs onto. I've had no problem with that.
Sarah and Gary both have video ipods and love them. Although, Sarah's ipod has been misplaced, it's never really been lost, since we've always found it again. Both of my kids have managed not to lose their expensive graphing calculators, so I would expect that they wouldn't lose an ipod, either.
The concern I'd have with an Ipod is that the batteries are hard to replace when they wear out. Apple made them more or less with a disposable mindset, thinking people wouldn buy their newest Ipod before they wore out the batteries in the older ones. It's a policy I have problems with, plus I like to be able to replace batteries.
I had been told a long time ago that you can only use ITunes for the IPod. Is that still correct, or can you use any downloads from any site, such as Wal-mart.com downloads, etc?
Dawn (unschoolmom), for many of us, that is the case, we will buy the new one before the old one wears out. However, the iPod is rechargable thrrough the USB cord, it is charging while you sync it to the computer. My Nano is over a year old, and still holds the same charge that it did brand new. I have often gone weeks without needing to charge it, with light use. Adena, you have to use iTunes to put the music on there, but I have lots of downloaded music (ok, ok, I'm a pirate, commence throwing things at me.) and I just transfer those files into iTunes to add to my iPod. You can rip a CD onto your computer, and do the same.
Crystal...new topic, but what about movies? We have been using handbrake to convert movies. Is there an easier way? I just refuse to have to purchase the same movie in different formats. I think if I buy the dvd I should be able to watch it on my ipod.
No that would be false, there are many places that sell music for the IPod now. For example.. UnlimitedDownloadCenter.com Feed My IPods Dillan thinks she would/should be okay with it. I would approach her with a few questions about why she is wanting the IPod. She might see it as a compromise.. She is getting music and you are not spending an arm and a leg for something that she just might misplace. I would buy and IPod for my teenage children, however I wouldn't buy one for the girls at 10.. They just don't understand the value of money yet and I know one of two things would happen, they wouldn't use it correctly or they wouldn't use it at all. I would rather pay less, get them use to using the thing and taking care of something and then up grade in time. Rather than going forward with something I have doubts about, I know my children are.. Could you do that... Lets see how you do with this one and if you do well on your ** birthday/Christmas I will get you the current IPod product? This is a test drive, type of suggestion.
Ahhh, Crystal, exactly what I needed to know if you know what I mean! Teehee! Thanks!
Thanks for all the advice ladies. I will talk to her about it to see why she wants an IPod instead of an MP3. The one we did get plays videos and everything so it appears to have many of the same features as the current Nano with the exception that most of them are now 4 GB and the one we got is 2GB.
Kaye, I haven't done it yet, because I *just* got my Touch, but at first look, Handbrake is the common options. Do you not like Handbrake? Here is a link to another method, and if you tell me what you dislike about your current one, I can probably find a better way. Alpha Geek
Really the only thing I think I don't like about it is speed. It takes 6-8 hours to convert it. Also you have to rip it to your computer first. Because of the copyright stuff, handbrake won't use original movies. But since we own the movies and don't have copies (which apparently a lot of people do), we have to take an extra step. My husband is currently doing a movie a night to add to our library.
Well, I have a few options for you, I'll post them when I get home tonight.
I talked to DD about why she wanted an IPod. Here is what she said: -you can hook it up to a base -you can connect to an IDog (BTW...she has neither of these two things and I think you can do these with an MP3 as well). -it has a screen so you can see the songs Then I asked if she had any friends that had one and she said she had one friend that had an MP3 that looked like an IPod. I asked if she would be disappointed if she didn't get one and she said no, she just wants something to play the music she likes. So, I think we will be okay for this year. Thanks for all of the advice ladies. Now...where do we go to get songs?
You are correct, you can do all of those things with an mp3. My kids have the iFlower and an iDog, and hook their mp3 to them with no problem. And they are getting a base with a cd player for Christmas to hook them to. There are tons of places for songs, both "legal" and "illegal". I'm sure anyone here can give you advice on both. However, you can get cheap downloads at walmart.com.
