Real work from home ideas

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive December 2007: Real work from home ideas
By Luvn29 on Monday, December 10, 2007 - 10:50 am:

Just curious about ideas of things that really work... to make a real living from working out of the home...

I am legally disabled, but to the point that I feel up to working...most of the time. But there are days I just do not feel up to leaving the house. Right now I am a substitute teacher which works very well for me. However, when we move to Myrtle Beach in the Spring, I will be getting a full time job.

Just wondering about real life ideas that people have in case it comes to that.

I have tons of experience in Microsoft Office: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc. I wonder if there would be a demand for some kind of hire by the hour office consultant. You know, to do regular office tasks that have to be done, but take a lot of time to do. Things like certain reports or something. Things that have to be done, but take up a lot of the regular secretary or administrative assistant's time. It would free up the regular's time to do necessary tasks, without adding an additional employee to payroll or full-time benefits.

So, anyone have any ideas out there?

I make $35/hour tutoring math and science out of my house. I do 1, sometimes 2, hours a day for 3 days a week or so. I love it! I have a website if you'd like to see it.
I email the teachers in the surrounding area and advertise through Craigslist as well. I get the books from the teacher and email once a week to keep up. Let me know if you want the website and I'll email it to you.

Heidi - Do you tutor in your home, a library, the student's home???

Also, do you set up a contract for payment, and/or what are your guidelines for payment. (such as payment is made prior to services, after, once a month, etc.)

Elementary reading tutors are needed around here and that's my specialty. I've thought of doing it, but always was swamped with DT clients. I'm a little low right now, so it's crossed my mind again. I live a ways out of town though, so the drive for me would have to be considered. That's why I ask about where you do the tutoring.

Hi you guys,
Sorry, I've been swamped with work...ie, bills. FUN!
Adena, I will email my website to you. My brother and his wonderful wife designed it and they keep it up and going for $5 a month or less, I believe. It's so minimal, he doesn't even charge me. I think parents and students like it because it's an up-front informational tool that lets them know who I am and how much is charged.

Deanna, I tutor out of my home and I *should* do contracts. Although, most kids and parents love coming that it's not really a problem. There are so many kids out there that need math help that I have to turn them away, which breaks my heart. So, if one dropped off the face of the earth, I could have another one calling soon after. Oh, and I accept cash or check. Sometimes they like to pay for a whole month which is fine by me.
You'd make a KILLING by being a reading specialist. I've been asked *billions* of times if I tutor reading and I wish I could.
Could you advertise with your local school and maybe there are some kids in your area willing to come to your house? You'd be surprised what parents will do for a good tutor and most commercial places charge $50+.
I can send you both my set-up sheet just so you can see how I "interview" them, etc. I also charge $15 for the first time I meet with them and their parents. And, I give them a once-a-week hotline # (my home phone...LOL) so they can call during the week and ask a question about homework, or they can email me.)

Thanks for the info. I'd like to see your interview sheet. You can email me at reds 9298 @ insightbb dot com. Even if it's something I did over the summer, I would really enjoy it. Seeing this thread sparked me thinking about it again. I love DT, but like I said, when I'm low on clients I start feeling like I need to do something else to keep my brain going! LOL
