Dog food update

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive November 2007: Dog food update
By Tunnia on Tuesday, November 27, 2007 - 09:11 am:

I thought I'd come on here and update those of you who might be interested in my adventures in cooking for our dog.

We are almost one month into the home-cooked dog food and things are going great. I made a second batch a week ago and I learned that mackerel, while good for her, gives Indy terrible breath! LOL She is loving the food, is very healthy, active, and looks great! People compliment all the time on what a pretty dog she is and how beautiful her coat is. It is very sleek and shiny and you can see the muscles rippling underneath as she walks. She isn't scratching any longer either. Just to see what would happen I gave her one meal of her left-over kibble last weekend and she scratched all day! That confirmed with me that I'm doing the right thing.

I did take her to the vet a couple of weeks ago and talked with him and he is fine with it. He did say that she was towards the top of her weight range (she's 56lbs, but a smaller-framed boxer) so we cut her food portion back some. She seems hungrier so I plan to add a filler of some sort in the next batch I make. I'm still researching that. All-in-all, I am pleased with the results.:) Next I'm trying her on venison. Dh shot a deer last weekend and I had him save me a few bones, the heart, liver, and some meat scraps. I'm freezing it all for two weeks before preparing it in the pressure cooker to be safe although I will probably give her a raw leg bone to gnaw on.
