Finally going to the ENT...what can I expect?

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive November 2007: Finally going to the ENT...what can I expect?
By Jackie on Monday, November 19, 2007 - 08:32 am:

What can I expect at the ENT today? I feel like a big baby, but I am always anxious about things that are different? Will they stick things up my nose LOL...do they do different things they the regular dr does? My appt today is at 1:45.

By Ginny~moderator on Monday, November 19, 2007 - 09:12 am:

Yes, they will almost certainly stick things up your nose, and will first use a topical anesthetic spray that tastes just awful. And they may stick something down your throat. BTDT every 3 months for about 5 years. No fun, but my sinuses are in good shape. Be sure to tell the ENT all the prescription *and* non-prescription medications you are taking and have taken in the past month.

On my first visit to the ENT last spring, he shined a bright light around my cheeks and forehead and looked in my eyes, ears and up my nose. None of it was painful or uncomfortable. He showed me lots of pics and talked alot about allergies. And he told me that before he did anything invasive, he wanted to check out my allergies thru allergy testing. He said my nasal septum was very deviated and maybe might need surgery to correct that but we'd try other things first. If you haven't already had a CT of your head and sinuses they'll probably set that up.

But luck was on my side. I went with the nurse to set up for allergy testing. She and I talked awhile about what would happen and what I had to do before the allergy testing. And what got me better was when she told me NO antihistamines and no certain foods for a week before testing. I thought I would die from an exploded head in a week without all that stuff. So a week before I started in w/o the cold meds and started drinking water. No sodas and no diet sodas. I started feeling better almost immediately and by the day before my allergy testing I felt so much better that I called and cancelled and told her why. My ears were clear and my head didn't hurt. I was great and have been great except when I slip up and drink several sodas in a couple of days. But that was just my luck. My CT also showed a small growth in one of my sinuses that could need surgery, too. But it will have to be bad before I do that.

Good luck. It will be fine. The ENT was great.

I don't know why I am so nervous. I guess my biggest fear, that I will go, they will say nothing is wrong with you, and send me on my way LOL

I hope your appointment goes well, Jackie.
((Hugs))

Hope all went well! I was at the ENT today, too. He scoped me and now I have a horrible headache!
Let us know how it went.

Well it was sort of a waste of time. He seems to feel it is NOT a sinus problem. He looked up my nose at least 4 times, looked in ears, throat, felt and pushed on my face, all areas. He said nothing looked swollen. He said ears, throat looked clear. He has ordered a ct scan which will be done on Wednesday. He said it is unusual to have the complaints I have with no nasal dicharge and no other symptoms and be considered sinusitis. He knows I have a history of migraines, and he refered me to a neuroligist. UGH...I was so NOT impressed by this man. Yes, I can get a 2nd opinion, but honestly I am not totally conviced that I do have sinus issues, I just "thought" it could be. After I have the CT scan of the sinus's I guess we will have a better picture.
This was an older dr, and I felt like that there was more he could of done. But, on the ohter hand, I am not an expert, and I only know what I feel...
So on to the CT scan, and off to the Neuorologist. I am actually glad I am going to the Neurologist, as I do have some sort of daily headache, and I started on Topamax but headaches havent disappeard completely.

By Karen~admin on Monday, November 19, 2007 - 06:33 pm:

Jackie, if you have daily headaches, have you had your eyes checked recently? I'd be surprised if that were not brought up. Vision issues can cause headaches.

By Jackie on Monday, November 19, 2007 - 06:47 pm:

Karen, that was brought up as well... The dr suggested that too. I guess I was more frustrated with the fact that he said he could find nothing wrong with me. I came in there complaining of cheekbone pain, behind the eye pain, nose pain. Yet, with all his pushing, and looking up my nose, and shooting the water thing up there, and looking more LOL...still couldnt find anything swollen or out of the ordinary, he seemed at a loss...UGH...Unfortunately, I carry my stress in my head LOL... you know how people have a nervous stomach, I have a nervous head. When I get stressed, my head starts to pound. In all seriousness, I do have headaches a lot.The topamax is startin to help, its been less then a month, and Im still on the smallest dosage. BUT...Imitrex is my lifesaver, when those babies kick in, I feel like a new women...

I have to bring my dd in to a ENT to get her adenoids assessed. The dentist ,of all people, suggested she may need to get her adnoids out. It has to do with airway obstruction and the way she breathes, that is probably causing her mouth to grow narrower which messes up her teeth.
The dr. who told me this is the one I work for. He is very smart and everything he said makes perfect sense to me.
Also, getting the adenoids removed may help get rid of the dark circles under her eyes.
Who Knew?? LOL
I look forward to seeing what the ENT says about all this.

By Karen~admin on Tuesday, November 20, 2007 - 10:16 am:

Well, with cheekbone pain, it also *could* be tooth problems. BTDT too. LOL When did you last see the dentist?

By Jackie on Tuesday, November 20, 2007 - 10:50 am:

Karen I normally go to the Dentist every 4 months. I go to the periodontist for my cleanings. I was scheduled to go to the first week of January. I just called to see if I could get an appt for Dec, they were booked, but had an opening for 8am on Mon so I took it. I forgot to mention(Have done reading on this)that I have noticed I clench my teeth when I sleep. I often find myself when I wake up with a clenched jaw OUCH...I never put two and two together. I have read that this can cause facial pain, and ever earaches as well as other pain in the face. It now sort of makes sense. So that is on my schedule to have it checked out as well.. I am not sure what they do for that.

By Bobbie~moderatr on Tuesday, November 20, 2007 - 01:30 pm:

They will do a mouth guard and yes that is very likely an issues that would cause face pain. LOL

By Bellajoe on Tuesday, November 20, 2007 - 04:58 pm:

Yes, they can make you an NTI or Night Guard really easily. Our dentist does it in the office. At our office they say that if it doesn't work, they can return it. No one has ever returned any.

By Bobbie~moderatr on Tuesday, November 20, 2007 - 05:28 pm:

It acts as a cushion between your teeth, prevents teeth on teeth grinding but in time they wear down. So know it will need to be replaced, depending on how bad you are grinding and clenching at night.

By Claire on Tuesday, November 20, 2007 - 07:05 pm:

When was the last time you had you blood pressure checked?

By Jackie on Tuesday, November 20, 2007 - 08:13 pm:

the last two time I was at the drs office, so the last time was two weeks ago.

By Debbie on Tuesday, November 20, 2007 - 10:19 pm:

I hope you find out what is going on, Jackie. There is nothing worse then feeling bad, and not knowing what is causing it.
