Anyone take Midrin for migraine/tension headaches?

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive November 2007: Anyone take Midrin for migraine/tension headaches?
By Karen~admin on Monday, November 12, 2007 - 06:42 pm:

I have used Maxault with fairly good results for *true*, vascular migraines, but with my neck issues, I've been having a lot of tension/migraine headaches. My doc prescribed Midrin, which I took probably 20 years ago, and actually haven't even seen in a long time.

It works wonders, in fact, it's the only thing that works on these headaches, even narcotic meds don't work. Anyway, I went to get my new Rx today, and was informed it's no longer being made. Does anyone else take it? Do you know where I can find it?

If it's not broke, don't fix it!

And speaking of neck issues, doc is ordering another MRI of my C-spine. Having lots of issues with my neck, and had 2 dozen injections this afternoon, which I've been having to have every month for the past several months. The last MRI was actually the day before we evacuated for Katrina. LOL Now, my neck *crunches* when I turn my head, and instead of just neck pain, whatever is going on is causing these awful headaches.

I have had migraines my whole life but I managed them up until about 14 years ago and then they got out of hand.

I was on Maxalt-MLT 10 mg, disintegrating tablets, twice a day on a daily bases for probably 10 years. They worked for me at the time. I was also taking Maxeran 20 mg for nausea (a kin to morning sickness) and odor sensitivity, at the same time.

These issues are more than likely results of the undiagnosed Fibromyalgia because they are both clearly symptoms of Fibro. I have slight DDD in my cervical spine but not enough to cause the level of pain the migraines were causing me. I would literally have to be in a dark room, with my eyes covered, no noise (breathing hurt my head), I would get to the point I was throwing up with them and they would last for days. I would have residual pain for days after the migraine would pass.

Last November while I was going through my huge flare, that caused me to push for answers to my health, they put me on Midrin for the four weeks it took me to get in to the Rheumatologist. I can't say how it worked as they had me on so many drugs to combat the pain that I don't know what was working and what wasn't. The Rheumatologist took me off of them when he started me on the Neurontin. I love Neurontin by the way. In the past year, No migraines, plenty of other issues but no more migraines.

Wish I could be of more help. :( Hopefully they can find something that works for you.

I just called my doctor's office and told them I can't get the Midrin, and asked if he could come up with something comparable to call in.

Bobbie, I've had migraines since I was a child too. There was a period of my life, in my very early 20's, when I had them 3 times weekly. It was awful! In my late 20's and through my 30's, I ended up in the ER a number of times for the migraines. After my hysterectomy in 1994, I didn't get a single one for years. Then I'd get an occasional one - one was so bad, Jeff took me to the ER one night when DH was working. The last 2-3 years I've started getting them again, and the last 18 months has been pretty bad - they are getting worse.

However, these headaches I've been getting the last 6 months or so aren't typical vascular migraines, you know, the kind that is one-sided, blinding pain and nausea, where you have to be in a very quiet, dark room for hours. These are definitely partially caused from whatever's going on in my neck, and the Maxalt isn't working on them. The Midrin worked wonders because it's for tension/migraine headaches. And now I can't get it. :-(

I really hope he can find something that is similar!

Karen, I hope you can find some relief. The headaches sound unbearable.

Midrin isn't being made but there are generics of it. Midchlor and Amidrine are a couple of the generic brands. Try calling an independent pharmacy (one not part of a big chain) and ask them to try to find a generic of Midrin for you. Independent stores can try alot harder to find things than the big chains will. Nothing against the pharmacists who work in the big chains. They are just under alot of corporate guidelines to not spend money on nonmoneymaking items. And make sure your prescription is signed on the line for generic substitution allowed.

Debbie, I was actually taking a generic, Duradrin. The pharmacist told me all forms are discontinued. I researched online, and everything I read said the same thing.

I spoke with the pharmacist yesterday and she told me that Epidrin would be a substitute but that has been backordered for a while! UGH! She said they are *supposed* to get some in on the 20th. She and my doc are trying to come up with an alternative.

The pharmacy has my Rx, so I'll need that to try to find another pharmacy who can get something, if CVS cannot.

Well, that blows my mind. I know we have some in the hospital. It used to be a BIG mover but we hardly use it anymore since Imitrex and Maxalt and the others like that came on the market.

Good luck!

Too bad I don't live in TN, then I could get some! LOL
