Stupid Deer
Fortunately, I'm not whining that I had a car-deer accident, but that we are trying to avoid one. Sarah wants to come home this weekend to see the combined high-school musical this weekend (Beauty and the Beast). I was going to pick her up tonight, but it's a good hour of driving through mostly rural countryside. It's also November, which means the stags are going crazy with females in heat, everywhere, so they aren't looking out for cars. In the past 2 days, there have been 9 car-deer accidents, so Gary declared that we will go get here early tomorrow morning. I'm bummed, becuase I was looking forward to seeing her tonight, but since my family has been involved in 3 car-deer accidents in the 20 years that we have been married, I can see the logic. Argh. Both of the times I have hit a deer with my car, has been in November. Once was in November of 1988 and the second time was November of 2002. Different locations, but both times, not even that far away from a city! So, we will be staying home tonight! I guess no sense in tempting fate, since there was nothing planned for tonight, anyway, other than eating supper together. Having to deal with insurance companies and body shops really isn't my idea of fun. A car-deer accident is why I'm driving a Taurus now, instead of a Chevy Celebrity. When I have time later, maybe I'll post a picture of my damaged Celebrity. It was about $3200 worth of damage! 9 Car-Deer Crashes
We have the same issues here in Ohio. They start taking up the fields and the deer are every where.. We have them all the way up to the edge of town. It is crazy to see them in the field next to the grocery store in a huge group, you know no good can come from that. Taking their land up with houses and they have no where else to go but into town. Sad. Hope you have safe travel..
My DH had just bought his new Jeep Wrangler and only had it for about a week and a deer ran out in front of him. It did about $2000 worth of damages. Before he bought the Wrangler, he had a small truck, and he also hit a deer with it. This year, I feel somewhat better about his travels because he is in a new area that does not require him to travel as many rural roads. *wishing you a safe trip, Dawn*
Gary's 2005 VW Passat, met up with a deer 2 months after we got it! (February 2005) Argh. It was fixable, though. We see deer within the city limits, on occasion, too. They will be easier to see, in the daylight tomorrow, though.
My goodness, my Passat was struck by a kamikaze deer that hit the side of it. I was one month pregnant too and it scared the bejesus out of me. I had NO idea what hit my car until I looked in my rear view mirror.
I'm sorry you won't be able to drive over to get Sarah, tonight Dawn. Better safe than sorry, huh? I feel sorry for the deer in our area. There is so much construction going on, and the deer don't know where to go. We have to be careful coming home at night, because they often dash across the road. One night a female was struck and made her way off the main road to our front yard. We found her the next morning and she was barely alive. It was heartbreaking.:-( Hope you have a great weekend, Dawn!
We live in deer central where my house is. They are everywhere! One nearly ran into the side of my SUV a few years ago, similar to Heidi's incident. You really have to watch for them. I drive slower this time of year in the mornings and evenings because of it. Where there's one, there are always more, usually plenty more. We watch them in the woods in the evenings (across from our house) and see them occasionally passing by our yard. They are absolutely beautiful and so dangerous.
This time of year, too, is rutting season when the does are in heat. The bucks will go charging accross a busy road with one thing on their minds (typical guys. LOL!) I recently had someone at work tell me about deer whistles to put on your car. I guess they emit a sound that scares the deer from entering the roadway. I don't know if they work or not, but I bought a set for each of our cars from the auto parts store. I see a lot of deer, since I drive hime from work in the dark. Anybody have any experience with the whistles?
