My appointment today ( could be a little TMI on part)

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive November 2007: My appointment today ( could be a little TMI on part)
By Christylee on Tuesday, November 6, 2007 - 07:56 pm:

I went to my appointment for my pap today and asked my doctor to explain to me what the biopsy showed. He said that the cells they see are NOT cancerous but they could turn that way and that is why he's having me come back so often. I asked why we couldn't just remove the cells (like freezing or the heat way) and he said that they are really scattered and wouldn't be able to get them all. This way he will be able to monitor it closer and he really doesn't feel it's something to be concerned with at this point.

I also talked to him about the other concern I've been having. I've been having a yellow/brownish tint drainage from one of my nipples. After talking about it and my family history of breast cancer (my paternal grandma died of it before I was born and multiple cancers on my maternal side) we decided that even though I younger than the recommended age of normal mammograms that I should go. I called and made my appointment this afternoon and I go on 11/27. The lady said because it's for a family history that I'll meet with a doctor and watch a short video on breast awarness and then have the mammogram and more than likely I'll end up with the ultrasound too. I'm only 31 but my grandma was only 36 when she died of it so I'm trying to be very proactive in this.

They also did my labs (for my other issue) and ended up taking 8 large vials of blood. I wasn't supposed to have that done until next week so I hadn't eaten and boy am I puney tonight. It's only 7:00 and I'm in my pjs counting the minutes til I can put B in bed and head that way myself. lol....

Whoa, Christy,
The "8 large vials of blood" had me woozy for a second there. :)
I'm glad you're getting good information and that you're going to check out the breast thing. My doc had me start mamo's early because my mother had breast cancer. A couple years ago, my annual mamo turned out funny and they did a second one about a week after the first. That was a bit suspenseful, but it turned out okay. (Except my insurance wouldn't pay for the second one! Go figure.) Strangely enough, my ob/gyn wanted me to continue to have paps for a few years after my hysterectomy. I guess they wanted to make sure there weren't any cervical cells still wandering around in there.

It sounds like you've got some good care going for you. (Eight big vials! They must be testing for every disease known to science!) I hope you get a good rest tonight, you deserve it!

((((HUGS)))) The discharge would definitely have me freaked out. I hope everything is ok, thinking of you!!

Christy, yeah for you for being proactive.

I started doing mammos at 35, because of family history. I just read an article a year ago about your first one should be at 40, or at 10 years younger than the affected family member. So if you had a sister who got breast cancer at 40, then you should start at 30. I thought that was a great guideline.

As for discharge. TMI i still have some from nursing (my baby is 9). I talked with my dr and had testing run. The big test they ran was blood work for a pituatary tumor. Ultimately my breast just over produce hormones and they react.

Keep us posted!

Proactive in the right word, and indeed, good for you. And I'm glad your doctor listened and took you seriously.

Ditto what Ginny said. I'm glad he didn't just blow you off.

Kaye -- I wasn't able to breastfeed because of my other "issues" so that's not what's going on tehre. My doctor said since my grandmother was so young is why I needed to start now, your guideline does sound like a good one!

Thanks everyone, I slept like a baby last night. lol..
