California Fires
So far we aren't being affected too much where I am but dh called and said a Marine from his section (he lives in Vista) was evacuated last night. I was supposed to go to a Redken class today in Riverside with a friend from school but we didn't make it because the freeway was so backed up and the visibility was horrible so we turned around. There are fires everywhere and they are closing down a lot of the freeways. Dh won't be home until Friday night unless things get worse. Anyone else affected by this?
Well, I went out to visit my mom this weekend, and it's a good thing I came back Saturday night. There was a fire in the canyon in Castaic off the 5. We are actually not too far from Riverside, so I hear ya about the freeways. Just going outside you can tell it's a "fire day." Kwim? I hope the winds die down soon. It would be a big help.
I hope they stop burning soon. Sounds like a mess.
my sister is in carlsbad and just called sayin how bad it is !!! Im scared for her. Her work called her and said stay home. She has asthma and so its going to be really tuff on her breathing also. Insane im in calif also but above los angeles. keep us informed
my ds and dil and grandkids are at Camp Pendleton, oh my gosh this has me nervous!!! I need to call them and see what they are being told!
There are fires literally all around me! Mom2three1968- Don't worry! We're all fine as of now. Oceanside isn't in immediate danger but i'm definitely on constant watch because of the Fallbrook fire. I couldn't imagine the catastrophe if it came on base with all of our dry brush but as of now, we are safe.
Oh thank you for letting me know! The last year we were there it got pretty close, it came right up to the back of Camp Margarita where my dh worked. I still haven't talked to my dil but my son doesn't seem worried as of yet, but he's young, I'll sit here and worry for them. Will you keep me posted? I would appreciate it! Stay safe...
Which housing are are they in? The area out by Fallbrook (De Luz housing) is being warned that evacuations may come soon. It's burning in Southeast Fallbrook with winds at 40 mph. Tell them to be safe and if they need somewhere to go, I may be able to assist them. Where's Andi? I heard that Carlsbad was receiving reverse 911 calls.
Oh my gosh, how scary for you guys. Keep us posted how you are. I'm not near the fires, I'm more south of them in the South Bay beach cities. My allergies and asthma is killing me and everything is grey and covered with soot.
They are really close to the commissary, I think it is Santa Margarita housing, near Wire Mountain housing. I have been trying to get her on the phone and no answer, I don't know where they are... Thank you for offering to help. I appreciate that. Yikes deluz housing, that is too close for me..
I have emailed Andi, she is in Oceanside.
Okay, I live right next to them in the new WM2 housing. We are fine but the smoke is getting nervously close to us. I'll keep you updated.
South Mesa housing, I am so sorry, I am talking to my son right now. I had it wrong, sorry about that. He just told me that they find out tomorrow morning whether or not they will be going to help fight the fires. I looked on North County Times online and got the base info number and it said that there are no fires aboard Pendleton right now, that everything is operating under a normal schedule thus far. I'll be saying some prayers for my family and all in California!!!
I heard on the radio that there are about a total of 16 fires now burning in So Cal. New ones popped up near Big Bear at Lake Arrowhead and the North Ontario area. Not sure if Cal State San Bernardino area is being affeted by fires or just freeway closure. Also some fires down near Temecula area, I think it was. Orange County also has one. I also heard that we are getting firefighter help and equipment sent over from Arizona to help our firefighters. I'll try to keep getting updates

So far we are safe. I really think those of us in Ocenside are going to be fine. I have bags packed and the car full of gas just in case but I think we are fine. I also packed up importaint papers and pictures so we are ready to go. We have family that may have lost their home in Rancho Bernardo...we still don't know. We have friends in Fallbrook that will come to our house if they need to evacuate. It's so crazy...just like Melissa said there are fires all around us...crazy and scary. But we are SAFE for now and should stay safe.
any new news?? I heard they are evacuating escondido??!!
bump
Mom2three1968- All of the side of base your son lives on is under an evacuation warning. Keep in touch with him! My friends DH is on stand by with volunteer firefighters so we're receiving information fairly quickly! "As of 5 p.m., Monday, Oct. 22, residents of De Luz Housing, Serra Mesa Housing, San Luis Rey Housing and O’Neill Housing areas are on notice for possible evacuation. Erring on the side of caution, Camp Pendleton officials are recommending military members and their families begin to pack personal belongings and plenty of water. The Provost Marshall and military police will announce an evacuation plan, routes and billeting via a loud speaker when evacuation is imminent."
Grr... sorry, I was thinking he was in Serra Mesa. Disregard that!
Sorry Melissa, that was my fault probably, I had it wrong at first, Serra Mesa behind the country store was their old address. I am so worried, they have my 2 yr old grandson and my 1 month old granddaughter. I'm going to be doing alot of praying tonight...
Well if he is evacuated, we would be at the same time since we'ew still right down the street from him, so I will let you know if we hear word. We're still safe as of now though.
Thanks Melissa...
Melissa and all, Just talked to my dil she was feeding the baby, their friends from Serra Mesa are with them at their house. I am thinking of all of you constantly, I feel helpless, I am still praying for all of you. I will be back after work!
I hope you all will be ok and that they get these fires under control. How scary for you all.
Gosh, this is just terrible. I hope all of you remain safe and sound in your homes! I can't imagine what the air quality must be. My youngest would be going crazy with his asthma.
My DSD is now living @ Camp Pendleton, so I have been watching this closely. Does anyone know how things are in her area?
dh called me in the middle of the night last night and said that while they are all fine, they have set up areas in the Northern parts of Camp Pendleton and will be evacuating the housing residents from the southern parts of the base to there as a precaution. I'm very worried, I'm getting the "I'm Ok, there is nothing going on here" speel that I got from him when he was in Iraq last time and I knew better then. I'm not sure what to think now. Melissa & Mom2three1968- Your families are in my prayers. Please keep us updated. This is going to be a long day today at school.
Melissa, if you get evacuated and need a place to go you are welcome to come here. Not sure if we wll be evacuated or not but you are welcome. e-mail me your phoe number if you get evacuated so I can get in touch. El Camino High is close to our house and they are taking pets but no people. Stay Safe. wa hooper 5 @ cox . net
You are all in my thoughts and prayers! Please keep us posted.
You are all in my thoughts and prayers also....
Thanks for the offer Andi! I'll let you know if I need to take you up on it! I took pictures yesterday morning and then this morning. This is a 24 hour difference in the skies outside of my bedroom window: It's crazy!
Yikes!! You are all in my thoughts and prayers...
Got all the way to school to find out that it is closed. Good thing though because I forgot my inhaeler and the air is really bad. Melissa- Let me know if there is anything I can do for you.
Here are some pictures I took this morning. The Ash is so bad you can see it falling from the sky. The smell of smoke is very strong, we are all staying in the house today, including the animals.
Definitely a day to stay indoors. My eyes were burning yesterday just going outside to get the mail here (close to Riverside.) Everyone definitely keep us posted and be safe.
Keeping all of you in my prayers. Please stay safe.
Yuck! Keeping all of you in my prayers, too!
I just got home and talked to my dil and she said that you can smell the smoke even inside the house. Just as your pictures are showing ash is falling everywhere like dirty snow flakes. They have friends of theirs staying at there house that are from Serra Mesa area, they are staying inside, I told them why don't they take turns, (one watches kids) and get supplies, I don't even know what would be left at the commissary as far as diapers, formula, and bottled water. I know she has four cans of formula, enough diapers for the baby, but not sure how many diapers she has for my grandson. They have a quarter tank of gas in the car. I think truthfully she is afraid to go out, I can understand that. As I said before you just feel helpless. Wish I could scoop you all out to safety! Going to go and check the updates now! Take care everyone...!
Just got off the phone with dh, the fire has reached Pendleton. He said there are small fires in a few places but wasn't sure how bad they really were. I haven't heard anything on the news. I can see a lot of dark smoke in the area I think Pendleton is and our cars and sidewalks are covered in nastyness. I hope you all in the Pendleton area are ok.
I hope all of you in CA will be fine from this. How scary that must be!!
Camp Margarita and Horno are being evacuated from what i'm told, unofficially. That's a bit more North on base than we are but we're definitely keeping alert! The fires are behind the air station and by SOI. I'm starting to pack here and there just to be safe. Make sure you're checking the Pendleton website for updates too. My eyes have been glued to it all day! http://www.cpp.usmc.mil/
Melissa, What is your plan, where you are going to go if you need to leave your home? My dil is scared to go to the gym with the new baby, she is afraid of there being a mass panic and them getting trampled. Where are all of the places that they can go on base that are being designated as shelters? This is just awful, I wish there were something I could do, I feel so darn helpless..
I haven't quite figured it out. I can go to my stepdads house in central Orange County but they are all indoor smokers and the idea of going from fire smoke to cigarette smoke isn't pleasing! I have my FIL and DH's Uncle along the Orange County/Riverside County border but I haven't talked to them since this mess began. If anything, I may just go up to Orange County and find a hotel away from all this smoke! Don't hesitate to email me if your son and DIL need any help whatsoever! b o x z g r l @ h o t m a i l dot com
Your more than welcome to come here. Its kinda cramped and I'm still not completely unpacked but if you can overlook the mess we have a hideabed in the living room and extra beds in the kids' rooms.
I just now had the chance to read this thread completely. You are all in my thoughts and prayers.
A friend of mine has a db and sil in that area. They were awakened yesterday at about 3 am to evacuate. Their house was repeatedly shown on CNN yesterday burning down. It's heart breaking to watch and I pray for you all.
Melissa, If you would be willing to drive just a bit more, I'm in Chino Hills and we have ample room. Same goes for your dil and the babies, Mom2three1968. We have plenty of space. Please let me know if I can help. Nancy e n c h e n s @ y a h o o . c o m
I hope you and the kids will be okay, Melissa. Saying prayers for you. Mom2three, keeping your family in my thoughts and prayers, too. This must be awful for you, being far away and worrying. Hugs.
I am heartbroken for all of you ladies in California. Be safe. (((Hugs)))
I wasn't able to check in yesterday with you all.I'm praying for your families. Be safe and keep staying in touch on the board as long as you can. {{{{{HUGS}}}}}
My thoughts and prayers are with all of you California. How awful Please be safe!!!
It really is touching to see members open their homes to other members. We have such a great community here, as we when Mike and Amy had the house fire, when Hurricane Katrina hit, and now with the California wild fires. All of the families affected are in my thoughts during this, and I must say, I'm proud to be a member here.
Nancy, I wanted to say thank you for the offer, they have very little gas so I think that they better stay put. But I do appreciate it! I am so grateful for this site.
Camp Pendleton just updated their website: 0903 October 24, 2007 Camp Pendleton is currently fighting two separate fires aboard the base. The Horno fire is the largest, covering approximately 6,000 acres, and is 10% contained. Sections of that fire have threatened Interstate 5, causing its closure from Highway 76 to San Onofre. The Wilcox fire, covering approximately 200 acres, is approximately 80% contained, although a section of Basilone Road remains closed as a precautionary measure. A third fire was recently contained - located in the 21 Area, it is comprised of several smaller fires, covering an area of roughly two acres. Camp Pendleton authorities have relocated the residents of one housing area, San Onofre 1 and 2, to San Mateo. That relocation, which affected approximately 800 family members, was a precautionary measure in light of the proximity of the Horno fire. Camp Pendleton continues to do its utmost to support its neighbors: donating over 2,100 cots and other essentials to San Diego relief centers, contributing fire trucks and personnel to off-base firefighting efforts, and opening the Fallbrook Gate to over 23,000 civilian vehicles, allowing them to travel through Camp Pendleton to the north. Camp Pendleton officials have announced that only key and essential personnel, to include I Marine Expeditionary Force and Marine Corps Base personnel, should report aboard the base. All other military members and DOD employees will not be required to report to work due to safety concerns. However, they must contact their organizations and provide an update to their status. Updates are available through the individual's chain of command, KPEN TV Channel 18, the base information hotline at (866) 430-2764.
All our thoughts and prayers to all of you in California.
