'Tis the season
Ok...not *that* season, except for Yvonne! I'm talking about cold season now that the germ factories...um, I mean schools are back in session. My youngest is home with a stuffy nose, cough, and fever. The ped's office said I could bring her in but that they are seeing all kinds of viruses and they'd just prescribe rest and fluids unless there was something unusual going on. I'm using Motrin to control the fever (low 100's at it's highest) but I'm wondering what other moms use for congestion and a "wet" cough. She's not sleeping well and I'd like to find something that would offer her some relief so that she can get some rest. I know there has been a lot of negative press for cough suppresants. I've heard good things about Mucinex. Have any of you used it for your little ones? Any other suggestions? My dh swears Vicks Vaporub will help her but I've never used it.
Aww, hope she is feeling better soon. I really don't have much to say. Mucinex would probably help thin out the mucous and make it easier to cough up, etc. I've been rather sneezy lately, but definitely not sick. I'm guessing it's more of an allergy thing.
They now have Mucinex in children's strength!! I would suggest that or Robitussin DM. I love Mucinex, and always have some on hand. I need to stock up on the one for children. These are the only 2 cough medicines that ds's ENT recommends. She said they are the only effective ones to actually break up the mucus.
I just wanted to let you know that I have a children's vapor rub that has a cherry-ish scent along with the "vapor" scent that works so well for my children when they have congestion in their chest, nose, or head. My kids actually ask for it now. It's definitely worth having on hand. And you can use it for instant relief along with a cough medicine if you use one.
We use the vapor rub. And you know me and my homeopathic stuff..LOL. I use garlic cloves, mix with a touch of olive oil and rub into the bottoms of their feet, then cover with socks. This helps my youngest alot, my other two not as much. It is worth trying, but isn't near as great as the bb yogurt for puking..LOL! But obviously I only do this on days I have kept them home from school. I have also heard you can mix turmeric with pepper into milk and drink it (add honey for sweetness). I haven't tried it, but have a friend who swears by it. However all that being said..i use homopathic type stuff during the day, but at night nothing beats a good strong dose of triminic nighttime cold. I just found my little guy sleeps so much better if he is well medicated and that makes the next day a LOT better for us. If I don't give real meds he is up and up and up during the night.
"Ok...not *that* season, except for Yvonne" ----LOL I had a cold that I couldn't shake and the pharmacist recommended Mucinex to me. With-in 24 hours, I could breath again. All the "crud" was loosened up. I swear by it now. I gave Mucinex to my son and it worked wonders on him too. There is a child's version. I use vapor rub at night and it helps too. I also have a eucalyptus spray that I spray the pillows with.
Poor B!!! Children's NyQuil would be my best suggestion, anything like Mucinex during the night will probably make it harder to sleep. After Shane's little croup attack, Mads had to stay home with a fever, and they both have had coughs. Yucky little germ-fests!! I hope she's feeling better soon!!
I'm wtih your husband. Vapor Rub. I for myself when I'm stopped uo ( chest cold) will eat a little of the vicksfor my kids ( children's vapor rub for my 3 yo) will apply directly under there chin on there necks, make sure they stay covered and they sleep heavenly they can breath through there nostrials, it also breaks the mucus up so they exspell it better then with over the counter cough medicane.
Thanks everyone. Things went a little nuts around here last night so I just gave her the triaminic we had in the cabinet. I'm off to pick up some Mucinex and Vicks this morning. I may get some Nyquil for her tonight since I agree that Mucinex isn't going to give her much rest. We'll see how it goes today. Thanks again!
