Airlines and Car Seats
Just wondering if anyone knows whether or not you can take your carseats on the plane? Both my kids are in the Britax Marathon seats and both children are under 40 lbs. I don't feel comfortable not having both kids in seats where I know they will be safe. Are there any size restrictions for the seats? What about buying a booster and taking it along? Would that be better than nothing if car seats are not allowed? We are planning a trip and will rent a car once we arrive at our destination so we will need to bring our regular carseats with us, I'm hoping the airline will let us bring them on the plane to use while flying rather than checking them as luggage.
Good for you! We (CPS techs) recommend kids fly in car seats just as they would in a car. They are much safer and more comfortable that way. Although not required by law, the FAA does recommend kids under 40 lbs. fly in car seats. http://www.faa.gov/passengers/fly_children/crs/ The Marathon is aircraft certified so you should not having any difficulties using yours on a plane. Belt positioning booster seats are not permitted on airplanes. They require both a lap and shoulder belt, which aircraft seats do not have.
Yay thank you! I feel so much better. I read just recently that a plane hit turbulance and 9 people ended up in the hospital. They had almost no warning. They bounced up and hit the ceiling of the aircraft. Ouch! Imagine what could happen to a small child. I wear my seat belt in the plane at all times, I only remove it to go the washroom. DH and I have been on too many shakey flights not to wear our seat belts always. Oh and I will never again rent a car seat at our destination, we did this one time when our oldest was an infant, they gave us a baby seat that did not fit into the piece that sits in the car and we had to wait hours for a replacement. I worried about the car seat the whole time we were away. I know my seats are good seats and when we install them we know that they are installed correctly.
Oh, I've heard many horror stories about car seat rentals! I would also prefer to bring my own.
I think people don't use seats in planes because you have to buy a ticket for them. I guess if you had a few kids, it could get pretty expensive!
