Computer question

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive September 2007: Computer question
By Tink on Thursday, August 30, 2007 - 08:55 pm:

About a week ago, my computer stopped opening a new window when I would click on a link on a website. I ran a virus scan, checked for spyware, checked my settings (as far as I can find), and updated my browser but nothing happens when a link should open in a new window. Does anyone know how I can fix this or have any resourceful websites where I can figure this out? For now, I'm just opening every link in a new tab but it's driving me NUTS!

Tools>Internet Options>General>Tab Settings - check to see that it says to open a new one each time. Other than that, no other ideas. Hope you get it figured out. No fun when your computer does not do what you want it to. -- Oh - also I think there's a way to just go back to default settings from the Internet Options menu - you could try that, too.

Thanks, Ame. No luck. I tried restoring to default and restarting my pc and it still isn't opening a new window.:(

Tink, until you get it fixed (if ever), try right-clicking on the link. You should get a window asking you if you want to open, open in new window, and some other stuff. Click "open in new window" - that's what I do and it works very nicely.

I've had the defaults in my system change sometimes after I install the required updates from Microsoft. In fact, Microsoft has a new update because the last batch of updates messed up the program by which MS decides whether your installed versions of MS programs are "legal" or pirated, and people have been being told that a program they bought through MS is not "legal". A big hassle.

I've tried right-clicking and had no luck with that. Of course it would be my computer that decides to be difficult. I was hoping that you or Unschoolmom might have some idea but it looks like I'm just going to have to deal with it. Most of the time, I don't mind opening in a new tab but occasionally a site will have right-clicking functions forbidden and then I'm completely unable to navigate their site. Thanks, anyway.:)

What browswer are you using?

By Tink on Friday, August 31, 2007 - 08:55 pm:

I'm using a Yahoo/SBCglobal browser, based on IE and my IE is having the same problem.

I'm sure you won't be surprised, Ginny, but the fault rests squarely on Microsoft. Luckily, they also had the solution spelled out on their site. Everything seems to be ok now.

I'm glad it's all fixed now!
