Nice to know something your adult child doesn't

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive August 2007: Nice to know something your adult child doesn't

Of course, it comes mostly from having lived longer. Scott asked me, for a friend of his, if she could refuse a bequest under her grandmother's will, and what would happen to the bequest. I told him I believe she can refuse it, and it would just go back into the Estate. He said her grandmother (whom she didn't particularly care for) had left her some money and other things, and (the unwanted bequest) some junky figurines.

I said what kind - he said they were something called Hummel. Well!!! I immediately said hey, Hummel figurines can be worth a great deal of money, depending on the figure and the condition - check out e-Bay. Which he did, and I found the Hummelexchange site. Turns out some old Hummel figurines, depending on the figure, markings, and condition, can sell for anywhere from $150 to $1600!! So he emailed his friend.

I had a Hummel figure as a child - I have no idea where it is now, but I still remember having it. Given that grandmother's figurines are probably fairly old, makes sense to me that they may be worth some real money.

Wow. Maybe he/she should take the bequest and then sell the figurines on Ebay!

I remember Hummel, and I'm "only" 45...
I like them better than Precious Moments, but if you don't collect things like that, I can see where they could be called "junky figurines."
I still have a music box with a Hummel boy in the alps, it plays "Eidelweiss." I think I got it when I was about 7.

LOL...I know all about Hummels and I'm "only" 32! My husband probably doesn't have a clue though. I was always into collecting things and antiques. I never collected hummels, but knew about them as a result.

My mom has three from her mom. I remember having to move them when I did my dusting chore, LOL. I actually worked in a gift store about ten years ago that sold them. I was surprised they were still being produced.

They're still being produced, and fairly pricey. The least expensive one I saw on the web site was around $80, and up and up.
