DMV Question....re: replacement licenses
DD has had her license for less than 3 months. Within the first 10 days, her wallet was stolen, and her license was in it! So, we went and got the duplicate license. At the time, we were told by the DMV that you are only allowed 3 replacements (which you do pay for, BTW) in a five year period. We weren't really concerned, because how often does something like this happen, right? She kept her replacement license in a wallet in the console of her LOCKED car (she never takes it out for fear of having it stolen again).....Well, someone stole her wallet AGAIN. No money, nothing else but the d*mn license! We have no idea why this is happening, but we are guessing it is someone she works with. They are not allowed to keep keys on their person at work, so they are in the break room lockers. We think one of the girls did this just to be a b**ch. So now we go the the DMV on Monday AGAIN to get a second replacement...which brings me to my question: why is there a limit on replacements? Especially in the case of theft, etc.? We live in NH. I know that if you find a license after you have gotten a replacement, you must destroy it because it is reported as lost, and the replacement has a different color stripe under the photo to indicate that it is a replacement. That makes sense. But why is there a limit, and are there any exceptions? I will ask at the DMV Monday, but I thought maybe one of you might know. Thanks in advance for reading this far! PS (Yes, we are getting a LOCK for the locker at work....grrrr.....)
My guess is that it has to do with people who sell ID cards or licenses for fraudulent use, say for illegal immigrants or for fake id's used by underage kids to obtain prohibited substances. Could have something to do with the way things have changed since 9-11, too.
I checked the NH DMV site, and it mentions filling out a form, and paying a fee, but no limit on replacement licenses. I've had mine replaced a few times in 5 years (FL), and never heard of such limitations. I would inquire again, because in the case like your daughter, where it's been stolen, it seems like one would be entitled to a replacement. Perhaps if there is a limit, it can be waived with police reports.
Just a head's up, she might want to carry another form of ID with her until she renews. I had a NH Duplicate license and when cashing checks or using it as an ID, there were several occasions where they wanted a second ID.
I would think locking it in her car would be much safer than using the lockers.
So how did it go?? What did you find out?
They said that this is a NEW law, and thus far the State of NH has not EVER had anyone need more than 3 replacements during a license period (5 years....Meg's expires in 2012). The officer said they are not really sure what they would do if the need arose for another license beyond the 3rd replacement??!!!! Then WHY MAKE THE LAW?! Does that even make any sense? They also said it didn't matter whether or not it was just misplaced or if it was stolen, or whether or not a police report was filled out. I think we are going to hide this license in her car somewhere and keep our fingers crossed!
All sounds like something Callie would get into.. LOL So, if you loose it 4 times do you loose your right to drive???
