SARA LEE - CERTAIN BREADS RECALLED IN SOME STATES
From Reuters: "Sara Lee Corp. is recalling bread sold under EarthGrains, Sara Lee Delightful Wheat and several other brands because the loaves may contain small pieces of metal, the company said. In a news release on the U.S. Food and Drug Administration Web site dated Thursday, Sara Lee said the the bread subject to recall is sold in Mississippi and Alabama, most of Arkansas, far southeastern Missouri, western Georgia, southwestern Tennessee, southeastern Louisiana and the panhandle of Florida. The packages are stamped with "best if purchased by" dates of July 25, 2007 through Aug. 7, 2007 and include the code "222." The bread was produced at the company's Meridian, Mississippi, bakery. The bread should not be consumed and should be returned to the store where it was purchased for a full refund, Sara Lee said. A Sara Lee spokesman could not be reached for further comment. A list of the affected brands is available in the press release at http://www.fda.gov/oc/po/firmrecalls/saralee07_07.html. "
Thank you, Ginny.
Wow, that's kind of scary. We just finished a loaf of the Honey Wheat a couple days ago, I guess if there was metal we would have known. Thanks for posting this, Ginny!
Here's an update from Forbes: Sara Lee Corp. is recalling 27 brands of whole wheat bread products because they could contain small metal pieces, the company said Friday. A recent routine inspection of a bakery in Meridian, Miss., uncovered problems with a flour-sifting screen, said company spokesman Mark Goldman. The machine was "not up to our specification and raised the possibility some metal could have dislodged," Goldman said. The problem was isolated to the Meridian bakery, which continued production using bagged flour that did not require the sifting system, Goldman said. The recall involves EarthGrains, Publix, Sara Lee Delightful, Sara Lee Hearty & Delicious and several other brands that were stamped "best if purchased by" July 25, 2007, to Aug. 7, 2007, and included the code "222." The products were sold in Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri and Tennessee. Consumers can return the bread to the store where it was purchased for a refund, Downers Grove, Ill.-based Sara Lee said.
