Headaches!

By Stacey on Sunday, July 8, 2007 - 07:10 pm:

Does anyone experience chronic headaches? If so, what meds are you on and have you ever been to a chriroprator for them? I am 28 and have been experiencing headaches for as long as I can remember. I have been to eye dr, allery dr,family dr, neurologist, etc. I have had MRI done on my head. It's not yet figured out the cause of my headaches other then it's hereditary Im told and my mom suffers from migraines. I have been on topomax and I didn't like the way it made me feel. I have feuronol to take when I do get headaches. But, I have never tried a chiropractor. So, if anyone has had success or no success, I would love to hear from you. Thanks

Chiropractors are a GOD SEND to me. Usually an "adjustment" will do the trick right away. I also do neck exercises to help hold the adjustment. Stress is a trigger and so it nutrasweet. Have you tried altering your diet?

By Marcia on Sunday, July 8, 2007 - 09:29 pm:

I have often used a chiropractor and/or a massage therapist for headaches, and they both work wonders!

OH MY! YES! I have had migraines ever since I was 13....my mother and my grandmother also had them. I did see a chiropractor for about 1 year but the one I saw only made my money go away and I still had the migraine! HA! HA! I am now taking propranolol 40mg 2 times a day to help prevent the migraines and when I do feel one starting I take a zomig tablet 2.5mg. I have also used Imitrex in the past and it is also very effective. I take my pill when I feel the signs of the migraine and it is less than 10-15 minutes and I feel great! I seem to get them when there is a storm brewing...I know that sounds funny but I think it has to do with the pressure system.I also have problems being around certain smells...like tabu and other strong perfumes. I have also had MRI's and CAT scans done but there seems to be nothing wrong....so I guess my migraines are my burden in life and I am so greatful to have the medications we have now to make them go away.

Another thought which made a HUGE difference for me for terrible headaches....do you still have your wisdom teeth? When I had mine pulled about 13 years ago, I immediately felt a tremendous release of pressure when one side came out. My headaches went next to nothing after that and have remained that way since. Just another thought to consider. :)

Our neighbor across the street has always had terrible headaches. They have never found a cause. She suffers so much with them.

Here is a recent article regarding chiropractors adjusting above the neck. Just be careful and be sure to research.

TMJ can cause horrible headaches. I had a migraine type headache for 6 months following an accident where I had a whiplash injury to my neck. The ortho doc had me in P.T. 3X/weekly, and it was doing NOTHING for the headache. I finally saw a good chiropractor, and after the first adjustment, the headache was gone.

There are so many things that can cause serious headaches - diabetes, blood pressure, eyesight, are among them.

I get migraines, I know my triggers, but you just can't always avoid them. I take Maxault for mine and it works really well. It's non-narcotic. Another migraine med is Dolgic, it works well too.

I do not get migraines like my mother does, but I do get "very bad headaches" and I get them often. I will take a note of some of the meds you all mentioned and see what my Dr. recommends.

Deanna, yes I do have my wisdom teeth. They are all empacted. I will have to mention to my dentist next time I go and discuss my headaches with them. I really never talked to the dentist about them.

Thanks everyone for your input. It was very helpful. Hopefully something will make a change!

something as simple as slight dehydration can cause headaches.

By Nicki on Monday, July 9, 2007 - 03:04 pm:

I used to get really bad headaches that would lasts for days. They felt like cluster headaches. Then, due to neck problems, I had to train myself not to sleep on my back. Now, I don't get those type of headaches any longer. Not sure this is the reason, but thought I'd mention it. I think I was straining my neck muscles which would create muscle strain and pain.

I hope you're able to figure out the cause. It's so hard to function with chronic pain. Take care!

By Stacey on Monday, July 9, 2007 - 04:23 pm:

A part of me thinks it is my neck that causes my headaches. I just had my husband switch our matress becuase I would wake up with such neck pain. It's seems to have helped with my neck, but I still do have the headaches. That doesn't mean I am ruling out the neck. I don't know what the cause is, but it is really affecting my life. I get so miserable when I have them. It just totally stinks!!

Interesting that someone mentioned your teeth. My 14 year old daughter was having headaches every day. I took her to the neurologist for an EEG, and everything was fine. He specializes in migraines in kids. He suggested some supplements she could take before considering meds, so we went away with that info. That same day she had an appointment with the dentist. He commented on her teeth being chipped because of severe grinding. I asked him if that could be the cause of her headaches, and he said that it most definitely could. He made her a mouth guard to wear at night, and her headaches have almost disappeared. I never would have thought of that if we hadn't seen them both on the same day.

My sister gets bad headaches and she only recently discovered that Nutrasweet was a trigger for her, too.

When's the last time you replaced your pillow? I get pain in my neck and shoulders, when my pillow needs to be replaced.

I haven't went to a chiropractor, but used to suffer from migraines horribly. I went to see a natural doctor & we found out that I am allergic to msg or monosodium gluatanate - the preservative in the majority of foods. That's the main one. There are a couple of other preservatives that we haven't tracked down yet. My dad had horrible migraines, too. He went through years & years of tests, meds, etc. & found that his is food allergies (chili, raw onions, etc.), too. I can eat Doritos (msg) and within 12 to 24 hours, I'm curled up in a ball crying in pain, sick and thinking I'm going to die. Just what we found out for us. It changed our life when we started watching what I was eating & figured it out.

By Nicki on Monday, July 9, 2007 - 09:05 pm:

Stacey, have you tried one of those special neck pillows? I have used one for some time. It's made of memory foam and it helps keep the neck from straining during sleep. It took awhile for me to get used to one, but now I can't sleep on any other type of pillow! It has really helped. No more neck pain in the morning.:-) (My neck muscles will tense up during the day, but I find I wake up feeling better. I think it's that pillow.)
Hope you feel better soon.
Good luck.

I suffer terrible. I don't know if they are migraine that are trigger by sinus problems or hormonal or the weather. I just had one that lasted 2 days, they usually last 3 days. Then...does anyone experience this...after the headache better it leaves almost like a "bruise" or a residual weirdness where the headache was. Sinus meds help, 3 aspirin and sleep, a hot rag over my eyes. Oh, and when my teeth throb, I put put ambesol on them and that feels good.

By Stacey on Tuesday, July 10, 2007 - 09:03 pm:

Well, I do know that I grind my teeth! One of the meds I am on makes me grind. The thing is with that, I haven't always grinded them. And I've always suffered from headaches. So, that may be a factor, but I think it's more then that.

As far as nutrasweet, other then 1 diet coke a day, I'm not a bit nutrasweet fan.

I have never tried a neck pillow. That's an idea!

And forget over the counter meds. I think I have taken to many in my life that nothing seems to work anymore. I can take 4 of different kinds and it will NOT get rid of the headache.
