Homemade Cards vs Store Bought
Do your kids make homemade cards for special occasions or do you buy them.I can't justify spending money on all these cards during the year when they just get thrown out.(mainly talking b-day parties)Katie has another b-day party today and complained how she ALWAYS gets stuck making one.I told her homemade cards make people feel better.I know I love getting them.So what do your kids do....
Go to the dollar store. Cards are 50 cents each. I stock up on them and the kids choose the one they want. They still decorate the inside to make it "more special".
I don't send cards with my kids when they go to birthday parties. I just stick a tag on it that says TO: FROM: For other occasions like Father's Day, we buy a card from walmart or the kids make something special. But, that's only a few times a year.
We make most of our own cards. But what I do is a few times a year we have a craft day, we make lots of generic birthday cards, tags, thank you cards. Then I have a box we keep them in and we go pull one out when we need it. Sometimes I involve my dd in this, sometimes I just do them
Never ever store bought for kid birthday parties. They make a card if they want, or we cut a piece of matching wrapping paper and make a to/from tag. For adults, I let the kids make a card if they want, or if I've not gotten to the store in time.
I always have the kids make cards. I agree, that are too expensive to buy when the person is just going to glance at it and throw it away. Of course if i'm sending an adult a card, i will go to the 1/2 price store and buy one.
So far we go to the Dollar General for cheap cards or print them online and then Natalie decorates them. There are cute printable cards at fisherprice.com, even for a little older. We have printed several of those for occasions. I agree. Buying a regular-priced card is such a waste of money and really adds up over the year.
For the past few years, I've not liked buying cards. They never quite say what I want them to say, or if they do, the picture on it is kinda eh. So now we make them on the computer and put them on really pretty paper. We get to personalize them as much as we want, really make them special. If the kids are going to send something to GM and GP, I have them on my lap and we get to pick out the pictures together. We can put a photo of the kids on there, it's really great. After we print the cards, of course, we still handwrite a little note. One thing I find really interesting is that I've noticed that cards that are more personalized get saved in scrapbooks and stuff. At least around here.
Sarah has been taking computer cards, to all of her friends, as she goes to their graduation parties. The only thing it's costing me, is probably a new set of ink cartridges, but the current ones have lasted a long time.
My kids have always made cards, and I do, too. I make cards from photos I've taken, and the kids decorate them with whatever craft supplies they choose to use. I will sometimes buy cards from little gift shops if they have perfect verses on them, but that's not usually when I even have someone to buy for. Sometimes I just find something that's perfect for someone I know, and I buy it. Normally those are friendship cards.
The kids always make their own cards, with paper and markers/stickers not the computer. for family members and for friends, if they don't feel like making a card, I bought these little hanging tags and string and lots of birthday stickers and they make their own hang tag. They usually make thier own wrapping paper designs too, they like to get the Kraft paper or Plain wrapping paper and go to town with markers and stickers.
Sherri I love homemade cards. I have a lot of stamps and stickers and different colored card stock. I used to make them quite a bit. She may start liking it a bit better if you & her made a card making kit together. Buy a pretty box and colored paper and stickers and markers and a stamp set, etc..., and maybe then she'll feel better about having to make a card. Just a suggestion.
I do hang tags to go with gifts too.. I have been to too many parties where there are like two cards give by everyone at the party. The hang tags are more original, I often cut them into shapes. We print off, buy the Dollar General cards or make by hand all other cards. UNLESS, it is something extra special and then I break down and buy the good cards. LOL
Well her little friend enjoyed the homemade card and Katie felt good afterwards Sandysmom-We do have a special compartment for making cards,it has everything you can think of.That's why I refuse to buy cards when I spend a fortune on her craft room.I think doing up a bunch together at one time might make it fun. I think we'll do that on one of our girl nights. Thanks for all your input ladies
