DVD camcorders

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive June 2007: DVD camcorders

Do any of you have a DVD camcorder? We're researching them and hope to buy one within the next year or less. Looking at Sony Handycams using the mini-dvd's. I have questions though, like:
-What is the maximum time you can get on a DVD?
-When it says they are 2 sided, is the time listed the time you get on EACH side or the total time?
-Can you take the DVD out in the middle of the disc to view it, or is there some finalization process that has to take place? If so, once it's "finalized", does that mean you can't add any more to that disc?

The concern right now is that the dvd's we've seen don't seem to have much time on them. We have a hi-8 handycam right now that we love, but it's about 7 yrs old and a bit large compared to the new dvd camcorders.

Also, if you have one, any special dislikes about yours? TIA:)

We bought a hard drive camcorder and LOVE IT! It is so nice to not have to worry about tapes or DVDs or transferring anything. We can plug it right into the computer or TV and watch it. We can burn it right to DVD if we want to right from the computer. They cost a little more but think of all you would save not having to buy DVDs... Just a thought.

We have the hard drive version, and love it!! It holds about 7 hours of movies on it before you have to upload it to your computer, and that was way more than enough for our 2 week vacation this year.

Sarah and Marcia - We briefly thought of these, but you answered the question we had about them -how to transfer/save the movies. I wasn't sure if you could burn them to a DVD on the computer.

Do you have good picture quality? (I assume you do!)

We have wonderful picture quality. As a matter of fact we have been watching old videos lately that were compact VHS and they look like c*** compared to the new camera. The pictures are crystal clear.
