Remember the GE/Kenmore dishwasher recall?

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive July 2007: Remember the GE/Kenmore dishwasher recall?
By Ginny~moderator on Monday, June 4, 2007 - 06:31 pm:

Well, I got a letter today, and turns out my dishwasher is on the list. The good thing is my son said "Well, I don't mind washing dishes by hand until you get this sorted out."

So now I have to decide - do I want to get the dishwasher repaired, at no cost, or take a $150 rebate toward a new dishwasher (plus installation cost). I just don't know right now. I was fairly ignorant about dishwashers when I bought this one, and there are features it doesn't have and issues I have with it. Still, it means spending more money.

I'm going to go over to Sears and take a look at dishwashers, and what they cost, and what installation costs, before I decide. After all, I have a built-in two-legged dishwasher in the house, so I have time.

I guess, if you have time, you could save some money and get a new one. It sounds like if you're not that happy with the one you have (the mechanical one, not the human one:)) then you may as well get one you are happy with and take $150 towards it.

(BTW, dh found the adapter I needed for my portable dishwasher, so I am all set for now!)

I think I'd opt for the new one. Cocoabutter, I'm glad you can use yours!

I'm leaning in that direction myself, Dawn. Lisa, I also am glad to know you can now use your dishwasher - I remember how frustrated you were.

How old is your current mechanical one? In general dishwashers last about 10 years. So if it is only a couple years old, I would probably just fix it. But if you really hate it, then...hmmm.. What don't you like about it?

I have a bosch dishwasher. It is nice and quiet and cleans supurbly. However, I don't love the way the bottom rack is designed. It just doesn't hold things like I was used to. I have adjusted, but I still have bowl issues :)

However a new dishwasher can be very pricey if you get a lot of new features.

It's about 8 years old, and I have issues with it but I wouldn't say I hate it. Mostly, it is not very flexible when it comes to loading and doesn't have great capacity. Still, if the average life is 10 years, with this one being about 8 years old ...
I don't need/want a lot of the new features. I checked out Consumer Reports, and there's a Kenmore that is rated a Best Buy that is about $500. I certainly don't need a stainless steel tub or a sensor, or super quietness. I'm going to be looking at models at Sears this week, and think about it. Scott is willing to keep on washing dishes by hand (and, of course, I will too) while I make this decision.

Well, I decided to get a new dishwasher and told the GE people, who said they'd send me the refund form. They have sent me the refund form, and to my surprise, they've done things sensibly. I have been fretting for a couple of weeks that I'd have to produce the receipt from the purchase of the old dishwasher, and I can't find it. Usually I staple the receipts for major purchases to the manual for the appliance but I didn't this time. But, all they want is the label with the model/serial number from the old dishwasher. And, lo and behold, when I started working the corner of the old label, the whole thing came off in one piece, very easily, with enough stickum on the back of it to stick to the refund form. So now I have to get over to Sears and buy a new Kenmore dishwasher.

I will say, my son has been just wonderful about this. It seems like every time I realize there are 4 or 5 dishes in the sink, before I get a chance to wash them he is at the sink washing them. Since we started having to wash the dishes by hand, I think he's done 90% of the washing, and never uttered a complaint or even made a comment.

Wow, nice son and good idea to do a few at a time, instead of letting them all pile up! When I lived in an apartment in college, with 3 other people, I think everyone (me included) that someone else would just do them! That only works up to a point! Eventually it would be me who caved in and finally washed them! LOL!

Ginny, have you seen the double door dishwashers? You can actually do a small load of dishes. When we replace ours, that is what I'm getting. Kudos to Scott for stepping up!!!!!! Good luck with picking a new one.

I have to get a Kenmore, and I went by the Consumer Reports best buy recommendations. We got it today. I get a rebate from Sears for the delivery and 15% off because they're having a sale, and my sons can install it so no cost there, but $15 to have them remove the old one. Donald, my eldest, is in Canada right now, so we have to wait for him to come back and be able to come up to uninstall the old one, and then have the new one delivered, and then they'll install it. So it will be another couple of weeks with dishpan hands (for Scott, mostly).
