Flower question

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive June 2007: Flower question
By My2girlygirls on Friday, June 1, 2007 - 10:01 am:

I have a clematis that grows up and over my mailbox. It HAD beautiful purple blooms on it one day and all of the blooms were gone the next. Do bunnies like these? I have seen a family of bunnies around lately. The foilage on the plant looks fine, not diseased and the petals did not fall off because there was nothing on the ground. Something ate them. What can I do to stop them from eating my blooms?

Good luck with that. LOL! I've given up planting flowers in our yard because so far they have all been eaten by deer or rabbits. Our neighbor has a beautiful clematis full with blooms on her mailbox now, but I fear they will be gone soon. I'm tempted to take a picture before they're gone.

Let me know if you find something that works.

LOL Trina.. I am of the mind that there is no way to stop what naturally occurs in nature. Any steps to prevent something from happening creates further issues.

I have no suggestions either..

No one bothers my clematis. DH cuts it down in the fall, because it gets so big, and the next year it gets that big again and always blooms. I used to not be able to see it from my computer spot in the basement, but I can now! LOL! It just about blocks my small basement window, by the middle of summer.

We had marigolds at our church that the rabbits ate. They're not supposed to eat those! People plant marigolds to keep critters OUT of gardens (because they smell bad). Apparently no one told the rabbits at our church that, though. Sorry no suggestions. Good luck! :)

Thankfully my dogs keep the bunnies only AROUND the yard and rarely in it. My clematis is HUGE as a result and beautiful! No suggestions really, except that I hear about keeping animals away in general with small bowls of ammonia around the area. Not sure where yours is located (away from pets, kids, etc.), but if it is, that might be an option.

I put a cap full of ammonia in each trash bag before it goes in the dumpster to keep the raccoons out. It definitely works! Good luck.:)

Jasmine loves chasing bunnies! She only chases them to the lot line and then lets them alone! She has her fun. Bunnies still live. Although, I noticed today, that the baby isn't quite so little anymore.
