Here's an editorial in the NY Times: The Army, After Iraq: NYTimes Here is part of what the NY Times says: "America needs to keep investing in military technology. But it needs to stop shortchanging ordinary soldiers. They cannot match the lobbying firepower of high-tech defense contractors, but our security depends on them. Congress needs to heed the lessons of Walter Reed, armor shortages and other scandals and make wiser budgetary trade-offs."
That is so very true, and well written. Any of us that have lived in a military community over the past 5 years have seen the destruction of our forces with rapid deployments, rushed training, last-minute (or not at all) equipment distrobution, and inadequate support for the troops and families. A perfect example, friends of mine went to NTC (one month) in November, got orders while at NTC, came home for 3 weeks, went on holiday leave, were back at Riley for less than 6 weeks, during which they had ONE week of Arabic classes, had to be issued all of their gear, pack all of their bags, take everything to railhead, get all of the paperwork/homes/cars/families/wills/etc in order, and they deployed in early February. For them, this is their first deployment, but for many of their soldiers it is number 2 or 3. When they aren't in Iraq they are being sent to Korea or Afghanistan for a year or more, again without their families, and straining their resources.
Yikes. It's just a mess and not going to get better anytime soon!
